Re: the queen mother and the court, that was a fine opportunity for a “load bearing homosexuals” joke

As an Alan, I can tell you I'd probably run if a Hun was charging at me

Mythological figure- that Chechen guy that would throw grenades into tanks and then do a flip off of them. I think he was a wrestler?

As a Romanian listner, I'm surprised how often my country has come up - especially in topics not related to Ceaușescu or Vlad the Impaler. Ițm just glad I found the podcast, this weeks and last weeks episode scratch my exact nieche, you converse the same random way i browse wikipedia

All this talk about Faygo is giving me homestuck flashbacks, and I'm not sure how I feel about it

Watching the the Borgias and Nedicci series and thinking "no fickin way" looking it up and finding the Truth was MUCH worse in most cases

I love that this story took a turn across the battlefields of 2010s Warped Tour.

The Hungarians aren’t Huns, they’re from the Altai mountains and the name for themselves in Hungarian is nowhere close to Hun or Hungarian. You can learn more from the Alestorm song Magyarország.

Just wanted to say, found out the other day that both me and my dad started listening to this podcast independently of one another, and after several years of not talking to one another, it made for a nice point of connection for us. So thanks for that

Joe, you've literally used Sabaton as episode intros multiple times.

As someone from South FL we do not accept the designation of Fronczak/Attila as one of us. He's central Florida, which is a different kind of awful.

BREAKING NEWS: In light of recent homophobic statements by the Roman Empire the Power-Bottom Brigade has sought an alliance with the Local Dick Sucking Union. Some say they saw this alliance cumming. In hopes of bolstering ranks, emissaries have been sent to the Rim-job regiments, and Buttplay Battalion. Stay tuned, updates to come….

W
William Shackelford · October 21, 2024

Update: This just in, the Buttplay Battalion have abruptly pulled out. Leading to a sore rear in the Power Bottom Brigade’s defense.

I generated an AI image of a Smaug chain smoking a cigarette squatting in an adidas track suit surrounded by a horde of catalytic converters. Care for the image?

You're thinking of the Persian King Xerxes. There is a similar story about Caligula, but that's later and involves him ordering his soldiers to literally attacking the ocean with their weapons, rather than whip it.

W

I have gathered the 3 male urges from this podcast. Digging deep holes, Throwing things very far, and now hoarding all of your spoils together for future self-incrimination. The testament to Dude’s Rock!

My first exposure to Attila was at a music fest on the Jersey shore in the early 2010's. The two most memorable things were 1) the lead singer wearing a pink bunny onesie when it was 36C outside, and 2) despite having mainstage at 4pm there were only like two dozen people in the crowd at a fest with thousands.

Please please please look up the video of frankie palmarie (dont care if thats spelled wrong) getting shocked horrifically bad live on stage.

W

So I watched the video. It was in Moscow and the top comment said” in Russia, mic drops you” and that has to be the chef’s kiss on top of it.

It was Caligula who punished the sea. He wanted to invade Britain but the English Channel was against him, so Caligula got pissed. That's in Suetonius so make of it what you will. The legend of Canute and commanding the tide is one that often gets mistold. The original story comes from 12CE, by Hugh of Huntingdon (not sure about the name) and was supposed to demonstrate Canute's piety and wisdom. In this original version, one of Canute's courtiers, trying to curry favour, claimed Canute was so powerful he could command the waves. Canute took exception to this and immediately went to the sea to prove he couldn't. I don't remember what happened to the courtier, if anything, but presumably he never said anything to Canute again. But over time Huntingdon's story got misquoted and it became Canute trying to control the waves.
