I think a big part of why the classical era was seen as a golden era is because in the modern era as nation states and centralised governments started to form they were strongly influenced by these ancient institutions and writings on government from the ancients, in contrast to the medieval feudal system which was kind of patchwork.

A positive episode where at least the soldiers who are subjects of the episode mostly made it back in a couple of pieces?! Is this the right podcast?

In reference to the whole "lovers of greek culture" thing... So you're saying Armenians were the first Gyroboos?

B

"Gyroboos" what an awesome term.

But when did they fight The Baseball Furies?

B
Bobbie Fiasco · September 27, 2024

That was great! I tried reading the Anabasis and couldn't get past the boring classical writing style with no flair or drama whatsoever, so it was good to get to hear the whole tale

N

Lmao Afghanistan saved us both from hearing about that shit.

That boot has gotta be how theratopod satyrs became a thing Also I FEEL the Greeks crying out Thalatta in joy, but above all: Xenophon's frustration. Like he must have been "what God did I piss off... "

My wife happened to mishear the word anabases as "ana-baptist" and asked...oh does he mean like (J) family? ...i said no hun, but since she is coming over later i should let you listen to an episode about something called the munster rebellion....those girls are NOT having the sunday they thought they would lol

the like post merc job prospects thing blows cuz it fully just goes all the way down to like, if youre a security guard for a couple years it becomes a lot harder to actually find a job in a different field and it sucks x.x

What is have surmounted from the beginning is this.“ I believe P-Diddy, due to all the lube and male sex prostitutes, was spiritually Spartan. Some might say P-Diddy is reincarnation of an officer in the Band of Thebes. We believe Bad Boy Records is the Band of Thebes reincarnate, but instead of phalanx formations and massive spears, we got fire lyrics and Usher wrestling Diddy for the Last Box of cereal.” My source to back this claim up is I made it the eff up.

M
Major Dork Thorklestein, HonFRS · September 22, 2024

He's just "Diddy" now. He said the "P" was coming between him and his fans. Which honestly seems more like an R Kelly problem.

For a split second I thought we are gonna look at the Long March and how the Chinese Red Army nearly annihilated itself by crossing the same damn river four times.

W
William Shackelford · September 22, 2024

A self destruction and hemorrhaging of one’s troops for little to no gain….the Chinese Red Army must have been doctrinally Spartan I see.

M
Mitch Guerrerio · September 22, 2024
