American history is such a weird mix of the most fucked up violence you've ever heard of and "hey guys this is your official notice to disband your rebellion by the stated date or you will not be eligible for pardons"
The joke about Prestor John being who a medieval peasant would need to see to get a contract signed is what made me become a patreon subscriber. Loved relistening to this.
Diversity Win!: the protests against the whiskey tax are trans-inclusive
Neubauten rule and were also the most German band I've ever seen live.
Does Tom have a Stealie tattoo?
I too am a post punk child of the 1980’s… Einsturzende Neubauten helped deform my frontal lobe
Talking as a long time listener, I wish you guys would stay on topic more as I get a headache trying to follow the picture you are weaving, this is an issue my partner has too, and overall the information ends up going in one ear out the other. I like a tangent every now and then, but I've found that you guys go on tangents in the middle of the narrative to the point I forget about the actual historical summary and get whiplash when you guys go back to being a history podcast. That being said, I love the energy you guys have together and the synergy, just want the podcast to be a bit more streamlined. Love you guys still, appreciate the ADHD representation, but as someone who has the disorder, it only scrambles my brain even more!
Also chiming in here to say Neubaten and Steely Dan both own, I was listening to NPR last weekend and they did a thing on Pretzel Logic at fifty in which the critic derided Gaucho as “bloodless” and I got mad because one, fuck you nerd and then I felt a deep and loving pity– pietas in the liturgical Greek– for a man who had clearly never taken cocaine and fucked a nineteen year old.
Brandon Sanderson is head and shoulders above any other author I've read when it comes to world building, you're selling him short Joe.
I laughed way too hard at the Neubauten jokes.
Joe is really integrating well here, hating Amsterdam and complaining about prices. In a few months he'll be sending Tikkies to split drinks and exclusively using diseases as swearwords.
As someone with family from Bolton England, I can confirm that much of it still looks post apocalypse
The band is Crime and the City Solution.
I enjoy the sound of early German industrial music... in small doses. Mostly I listened to like one track from every act mentioned in Alex Reed's "Assimilate" and was like "oh whoa that's why they originally called it 'industrial'. incredible sounds." and then immediately went back to listening to the most derivative post/witch house.
Tar and feathering didn’t use what we think of today when we hear tar. It wasn’t tar used for roads it was pine tar used for rope making. It would hold the ends of rope together. It wasn’t boiling hot when poured on someone it was more like pouring syrup on someone
Einstürzende Neubauten is good. They inspired me to start welding up some mad max ass scrap metal instruments.
Considering that various folk styles of wrestling were very prevalent in the colonies having a 1700's Mayor Mike Hagar was probably a lot more likely than at any other time in American history.
So I looked up what a steeplejack is and found this on YouTube. Adjusted for inflation this dude was making 33k pounds to take that thing down a brick at a time. Fuck that. https://youtu.be/NKPApAsJbj4?si=Lv_DGpm1uPzJu7yq
I'm an industrial music fan but honestly never got to into Einstürzende Neubauten. Perhaps because i can never remember how to spell or say their name. Also they didn't make sexy dance music like My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. Also Steely Dan is really, really, really boring for a band that named themselves after a steam powered dildo from Naked Lunch.
I too was disappointed by Steely Dan's music after reading Naked Lunch
Trust only your fists, Hamilton will never help you
All my homies hate Bert
My old grad school professors have an American history podcast called “The Whiskey Rebellion” which LLBD is *significantly* more popular than… which is to say, y’all made it.
Matter of time before modesty is weaponized and police start putting images of goatxe on their riot shields to disperse zoomer protests
Steely Dan is in no way comparable to the Grateful Dead. They're so much better IMO.
And you are correct. Unfortunately they're associated with the most douchebag activity out there, yachting.
Joe revealing his great-grandfather was the milk man was pure gold, his comedic timing is getting even better. Also, Nate's Van Wilder pull shows that he is truly a man of culture.
That Rangers joke💀
I actually work at a distillery named after Philip Wigle. Glad you guys finally did this episode!
Neville tried to go out like Bill Cooper, but we hadn't invented the ATF yet
"European prices make no sense" Proceeds to compare Paris with rural Germany
My shitty little hometown finally makes the pod 🥲
Tom, take the Dan pill
He won't regret it.
Aw hell yeah I can listen to this one at work!
and then we got to Van Wilder, well it was a good run
So about the sewn up anti-fucking cocoon... like they did this knowing that every girl grew up knowing how to sew, right? I'm pretty sure it would be possible to re-sew it before morning.
I had a skim through the Wiki entry on Bundling Bags and it's supposed to be one large bag for both occupants, with a seam stitched up the middle between them. Not impossible to overcome but close to it
Gotta watch The Wire if you think The Shield is an honest representation of American police
The shield was created based in part of the rampart scandal
Whenever I express my firmly held opinion that Washington would have fought with the Confederacy, people always bring this up as evidence that supposedly proves me wrong. So I'm going to be interested to hear a better coverage than my bare bones knowledge.
Bout time with this one! That being said, thanks.
The Zim Dollar crashes through the wall: Heard you guys were talking Extreme inflation rendering the local currency worthless but didn’t invite me. Bit rude don’t you think?
