I love that this petty officer, suddenly promoted about a hundred times, hits the Naachi, runs up and apologizes, and that's probably the most explanation that has ever been given for the Mogami obliterating an friendly combatant.
I transited through CDG a week ago for the first time. While on my second gate transfer bus, I was watching outside where a vehicle was pulling a train of 5 baggage crates when the last one just fell right off and got left behind on the road. So if you want to know how luggage can get left behind/broken...
Regarding superstition as an alternative to strong institutions: my understanding is that “Chinese Traditional Medicine” is as systematized as it is because Mao wanted to save money on healthcare. (Also hence why China still doesn’t have socialized healthcare.)
If you have no shaving foam, lather up some soap, it ain't great, but it works better than nothing
Russian sailors getting taken out by guys with blowpipes in the blight town engine room as the entire ship's hp bar fills up with curse damage
Should have just sold this ship to the Dutch.
Correction: The Mogami was built as a "light" cruiser with 6.1 inch guns, fifteen of them. The 10x 8-inch gun configuration was the treaty violating one since it would come into heavy cruiser classification, and the turrets were designed to be swapped out at short notice so at the outbreak of war the Mogami light cruisers could become heavy cruisers.
Nah, you want a Japanese cruiser that refused to die, you gotta pick Aoba. Almost as bad luck attracting as Mogami, gets its shit rearranged every battle, somehow stayed afloat until July of 45.
Shippuku
Another notoriously superstitious group is EMS. Which crosses over with military superstitions a lot in my experience.
I also heard the engineering on the Mogami compared more than once to a crossover SUV. A lot of the IJN Cruisers were very top heavy and had issues with seaworthiness.
as someone balls deep in the current emo scene, you won’t really get it if you are cis tbh
Agree with Joe, CDG is the absolute worst
First time Brunei mention in LLBD history?
Koyo mentioned
You should do an episode on the Japanese destroyer Yukikaze (1939). That ship is the exact opposite of this one in that it was extremely lucky and was the only survivor of its class. Her last major action was escorting the Yamato in Operation Tengo.
A metaphor for Japan in the early 20th century.
SHIP TOO ANRGY TO DIE!
I love these types of episodes (I love everything you do). Thanks Joe!
I once went to an industrial show and had to look for my friends. Yes, I'm looking for two white guys with short black hair dressed all in black. I did eventually find them, but it took a bit.
78% of the crew survived, got damn
"Imperial Japanese fight club" new shirt design with an Elmer- Fudd-bowtied main turret pointed right back at itself
I appreciate the music segment
Lol at Tom thinking the Titanic was in the Mariana Trench.
Welding student here, my guess is that what happened is that in 1931 the Japanese Navy started using lower nickel steel in order to reduce cost, this would increase the risk of cracking along the heat affected zone after welding, especially without a change in weld procedure. I couldn't find much detail on it but it doesn't sound like they understood that the lower nickel alloys would require a different welding procedure. Another possibility is suggested by the fact that there was warping from excessive heat input during welding, this could put stress in the metal that could lead to cracking. Maybe both, who knows.
Is lower nickel steel lighter? Because the issue was weight, not cost.
The Piss Pickles is a great band name
I love me an episode on a specific vehicle or weapon! I couldn't think of how to phrase that better...
15 mins in, Mogami had 15 6in guns when built, so it could be classified as a light cruiser, when the treaty was thrown out the windows they installed the 8in guns they had laying around so it’d be a Heavy Cruiser
“Doomed Naval Vessel” is possibly my favorite sub genre of this show
That’s a close second to anything the Russians are involved in as far as I’m concerned.
The Omni-man meme but it's the Mogami looking at modern day American frigates and subs, pointing and screaming, "Look what they need to imitate a fraction of our power," as it crashes into another ship
Mogami didnt weigh "tens of thousands" of tonnes nor was it a battleship. It was laid down as nominally a light cruiser with 6 inch guns, ready to be converted into a heavy cruiser when the time was right, and at the end weighed about 14000 tons (claimed by the Japanese to be 8500. treaty limits for cruisers were 10000 tonnes, which was a flat out lie). They didn't replace 8 inch guns with "battleship" guns - they fitted 6 inch guns in triple turrets and replaced them with 8 inch in dual turrets as 8 inch was the largest calibre allowed in a cruiser under the treaty and while they cheated like hell, not that much (they had been fitted "for not with" the 8 inchers)
He did say that it WASN'T a battleship (multiple times, even), but I'm not sure how he would get the weight wrong. Maybe he just decided to jump to the final weight when describing it?
So the William D Porter but with a Japanese accent.
The Mogami was really good in Navy Field for a while
Agreed, good against its own fellow ships but good nonetheless
FYI. Scary kids scaring kids put out new music a few years ago, but the vocalist died from an overdose in like 2014.
Pro tip: if your old music isn’t doing it for you anymore and nothing new is hitting, there is only one answer: get very, VERY into James Brown. The funk years. Go to the Star Time compilation, scroll to Cold Sweat on disc 2, hit play and just keep going. Love Power Peace: Live in Paris. The Payback. Hell. The Funky People comps. Listen while you work, work out, drive, clean, everything. Just listen to James Brown for a fucking year and you’ll be hitting it on the one. This is the most correct opinion anyone has ever had.
This year I've been cursed with long 3-6 hour stays at Frankfurt airport. Even when I booked a ticket to avoid the stop in Frankfurt, my flight via Munich was cancelled, and the replacement Lufthansa gave me was via Frankfurt 😒
Ah, Frankfurt, the first place that shattered the idealized conception of Germany as a rational and well-functioning place.
KOYO IS FROM LONG ISLAND BABY. FUCK JERSEY FOREVER. KOYO FROM THE 51st STATE LONG ISLAND FOREVER
Today, we ask and answer the second most important nautical question; why boat *still* float?
HELL YEAH, STUPID BOATS!
BOAT POST BOAT POST
Love an episode about a big dumb boat!!
