Not my takeaway from this being seen by the SDV mention

It's really interesting to hear all this, it was an open secret that my highschool principal had been a member of the WU, he would guest teach for a week in our US Gov class to talk about the grand jury process and how radical movements were broken up in the 60s/70s. I actually got some extra credit for digging up clippings from the New Left Review showing his mugshot after he was brought in for building a bomb

If it's not already clear from this, I went to a VERY strange highschool

Oh Joe, you have no idea how lax capital security used to be. On a trip to DC, when I was ten or so, my father and I just sort of wandered into either the house or Senate where the guys have all those little rooms to chill in before going to the floor. Some had newspapers set outside on the floor. My dad stole one. We wandered to an entrance and a sleepy guard went, "why are you here?" We asked if we could leave by the door he was guarding. He said no. So we went back to wandering around completely unwatched and eventually exited through the parking garage.

I love it when Tom does these series on terror groups. If I may make a suggestion or just a faint hope, it's that he does a series on the Years of Lead and Red Brigades at some point. Even by Italian standards, it is an absolutely buckwild period in that country's history.

Can't wait for the 20th reboot of Futurama where Tom will be voicing Irish Nixon and Spiro Agnew.

Have to disagree about the Patti Hearst thing being bullshit. I'm pretty sure that if you join a group of people who have locked you in a closet and abused you in several different and terrible ways, it's mostly because you want to get out of the closet and not a profound ideological shift.

Make no mistake Tom, your Nixon impression was on point, you just couldn't shake your accent, and that's okay. I'm sure good ol richie spun in his grave to hear himself as a dirty catholic.

I appreciate the Dusty Rhodes shout. I would have also accepted a Cro-Mags reference.

I was disappointed that Tom never came back to the ‘celebrity supporting a radical group’ train of thought. I was waiting for a reference to Shirley Douglas, wife of Donald Sutherland, mum of Kiefer Sutherland, daughter of Tommy Douglas (father of socialised health care in Canada and first socialist premier), who got busted buying hand grenades for the Black Panthers…by trying to pay for them with a personal cheque. Great episode, by the way…keep em coming!

Awesome series, I listened to Bill Ayers bio and a book on SDS. I can't say I think we need more left wing anarchist groups but maybe we do. The left wing seems not aggressive enough on important things. The right seems very up on their arms, I back neither but I'm in the Bible Belt, so I see more right wing militias in preparation. Awesome episode guys

TheBlack Panthers did do some work with the Young Lords, an Hispanic group who were very much like the Panthers and Fred Hampton was trying to organize poor white worker who had migrated from Appalachia to work in the factories in Chicago.

A couple of things. I remember watching the cops beat protesters in Grant Park on the TV in 1969. I was 13 at the time and already leaning to the left. My mother, on the other, did not lean to the, but she watched the TV in tears. All she saw was cops beating hilaremos with billy clubs. Also, that lawyer you mentioned, Elrod(sic) was with the DA’s office and put together the raid that killed Marc Clark & Fred Hampton.

I can confirm that walking into the Capitol building was the easiest thing in the world in the late 60s and early 70s. I did it a bunch of time with my dad. There was no security whatsoever. We would wander all over it no questions asked.

Leave it to the Weather Underground to call union workers counter revolutionaries. I have to wonder if there's shenanigans worked would their purges make Stalin blush?

J

Great work but with these revolutionary group episodes, when you hear one you’ve heard them all. A group of horny college students in the 70s become enamored by leftist ideals. They follow a cult personality and come to believe that they alone have the answers for societal reform. They edge closer to violence without understanding the consequences of violence to themselves or others. If the police don’t get them first - they hit thirty and the group collapses
