EARLY EPISODE: Task Force Smith
In the opening stages of the Korean War the US sent a badly underarmed, undermanned Task Force to blunt the advance of the entire North Korean military. It did not go great.

That one Korean soldier who was on fire but still shot Smith is a badass.
3:09 that's Michelangelo's creation of man on the Sistine chapel's ceiling.
Hearing daycare sick Nate (been there, I've got two of them) cheer up over the course of the episode was heart-warming.
I do want to applaud the dedication of that one idiot to taking prisoners and not killing people. I, uh... don't think that's quite the job of a soldier, but I will applaud the commitment.
My favourite nickname for my daughter is 'disease vector.' I feel your pain, Nate.
Cant wait to hear about the story of how the 65th infantry, a Puerto Rican regiment, got the record for the biggest mass court martial during the Korean War. (it was mostly racism)
The first time, I couldn't listen to a episode in one go, because it is too depressing.
Loving the Korean War content. So much more research & recognition is needed for that cluster fuck of a war. Hats off to the vets who endured it
Devil's advocate for that guy that got greased trying to tag-your-it the tank crew: The UN was a new thing, the Geneva conventions were just created, maybe there was some sentiment among people that warfare in this new world order would be some kind of quasi-formalized, disciplined affair where care was taken to only be as awful as deemed necessary by some international conduct agreement. Maybe he thought that the brutalism of the last war could die with that war, and warfare going forward would be more tempered and regulated and given some kind of oversight. Obviously he was wrong but maybe that was the context of that bizarre move.
Could be a good episode on the Geoje prison camp.
Great episode! Would love one about the first US boots on the ground in Vietnam
The first American tanks in Korea was the M24 Chaffee, which was a light recom tank. it was armed with a short barreled 75 mm gun, incapable of penetrating the front armour of a T34/85. The M24 only had one inch of armour. There were no Shermans or any other medium tank stationed in Japan. It was some time before the better tanks could appear in theatre, and as noted, the terrain is not tank country, but at least they could hold their own. David Hackworth gives a good outline of the total lack of preparedness of American forces in Japan in 1950 at the outbreak of the Korean conflict. Good thing that would never happen again.
You should do one on Rolling Thunder, another time we tripped over our dicks into a northern part of a communist occupied country escalting a war, this time the tropical version (Vietnam, it's Vietnam).
Small correction for Nate; the US didn't spend 1/3rd of it's GDP on the military in ww2. They spent OVER 2 FUCKING 3rd of their GDP on the war. To say they were downsizing is certainly true, but it almost feels like an understatement.
You guys needs to start a vape podcast. I be hitting the kiwi passions fruit elf bar rn
Welcome to kids Nate. You and your family will be more sick for the next 8 years than you have ever been in your life. Sometimes you go 3 months without a sneeze, sometimes you get 3 months of back to back viruses. It's relentless, and kids just can't stop greeting each other by mashing their faces together.
Then they sneeze into your open mouth
„Things that you have learned at school“ - I think I was twenty when I first learned that there was such a thing as an America involved Korean War, but I am also german, I guess that would explain it 😆
You could almost hear Nate having flashbacks to Peyton Manning running for his life in the snow from the Patriots D-line. I love it.
I welcome the bland vapes, but I ask them to go further and bring me the savory vapes. Bring me my smoked salmon and pot roast vapes.
They will absolutely still be stocking illegal vapes in NL in any polish, Bulgarian, of turkish market worth its salt. They just truck em in from out east. I don't vape but do all my shopping places like that. They ain't going away
Just a brief correction on the use of Sherman’s in the battle, the US never used Firefly. This was a Brit conversion that was largely offloaded to Argentina after the war. Most of the M4’s in service in Korea would have been M4A4E8, the “Easy 8’s”, armed with an equivalent 76mm high velocity gun, not too dissimilar to the Firefly’s 17pdr. They also rushed some Chaffee’s in from Japan armed with lower velocity 75mm guns and those were the ones that particularly struggled with the T-34s….. Unless I’m completely wrong in which case, ignore me and carry on 🤣
Beat me to it.
Was not expecting the Toni Kukoč aside, lol. That’s the kinda shit I love Nate for
I went to a Model United Nations Conference held by the University of Chicago in 2016 representing the United States. It was hell with trump getting elected, we got roasted hard. Luckily I was in a historical Security Council about the Korean Crisis, unluckily they had the USSR sitting in instead of abstaining. After a Cuban delegate kidnapped and replaced by a commie, and staring down the Cuban missile crisis with I think dutch attempted intervention. It was settled with Seoul split into North and South Seoul along I think like the 36th or 37th parallel.
my hot sports take: major league baseball should have a one beer per inning minimum for all players. bring back the original spirit of the game.
And a 7th inning bene inhaler
I recently saw the Harry S Truman museum/library. Got to read signs about these troops of Task Force Smith and the Polar Bear expidition. Large difference in how a museum and the government remembers these stories to how LLBD's and historical sources say the story went
With my limited understanding of the Korean War, it's hard not to feel North Korea was as close to 'right' as you can get. Especially when you consider the US-backed South Korean government using Japanese Imperial army officers and collaborators to solidify rule over a people who had been brutalized by them for decades. Colonial powers would use Japanese forces in a similar fashion in post-WW2 Vietnam and man oh man it becomes easy to see why swathes of the region fucking hated us.
I love your username lol
Very excited for Korean War content. Highly recommend Hampton Sides' On Desperate Ground about the Chosin Reservoir and all of the mishaps related to it.
The want for a LLBD Korean War series is high
fortunately there's still Blowback pod season 3
Tom is Brother Number One of the Irish Khmer Verte
The Netherlands is just too good and pure to exist on this cruel world and must therefore return to the life giving mother ocean :')
Uncle Sam can’t spare a square
Jesus Nate take a breath and Joe get to the shit 😂
Thank you, Joe!!! You have nailed a few off my wish list and this is one of them… along with operation Paul Bunyan and the USS Thresher and Dieppe… Falkland Islands maybe??? 🫡thank you for your service… #freenick
Good to see Joe got over his PTSD of the Korean War after losing his entire script
