BONUS: Operation Flipper
Joe, Nate, and Tom talk about the time British commandos attempted to kill Erwin Rommel. It did not go well.
Note: This was recorded in Jan. Before Toby Keith died.

On the subject of North Africa....You folks might enjoy Spike Milligan's war memoirs - they're very funny and strange, and I feel like you lovely folks would enjoy them.
So basically Mountbatten was a "Okay, you (IRA) can have a freebie.".
Nate and Tom doing the accents needs to become a bit. Holy shit
The halal sec is so fucking good
He doesn't deserve respect, but it's weird to me that Americans don't seem to ever see Rommel's first name correctly.
Not so Fun fact about Lit: the guitarist called the cops on Kelly Thomas that led to his beating and death.
6:00 there is no historical evidence that the hashashins used drugs. That's what their opponents said, under the assumption that no sane man would sacrifice his life for a cause, unless it is for a good cause like ours of course /s. The Nizaris assassins (called "fidai'n", "self-sacrificers", like "fedayeen") had to infiltrate their target's inner circle. A leader getting killed by a monk or a sufi scholar he knew for years had a big psychological impact. Therefore, a lot of the fidai'n had to study language, geopolitics and theology (and, shockingly, drugs don't make you better at studying). According to professors and scholars of Islamic studies like Azim Nanji and Farhad Daftary, the idea they got stoned to believe this was the paradise they would reach after completing the mission is legend. And good luck killing your target (or the good target) if you're high as a kite.

Toe-brook?
Around about 58:00 - I'm in a classes right now about WWI and the Soviet Union with a professor who has also devoted most of his life to studying both, and he says that Nazis also had a weird affinity for the English and Anglo-Saxon Americans because of their supposed shared cultural-ethnic heritage and language history. Something about eugenics "science" of the time got people into thinking that if they shared language roots then they were also ethnically related (despite the fact that I'm pale as hell and descended from western Europeans but learning Spanish). Could be that Rommel, being a Nazi close to Hitler, had similar feelings toward the English.
This might be my new favorite episode. The dream team coming together knocks it out of the park
American Weird Guys go into the political and civilian sectors normally. Our current House Speaker, MTG, Mike Lindell, and the Dilbert Guy. THAT SAID, we DO have Mike Sparks and Col. Burton.
And I argue for Col. Burton not because he launched a petty war on the Bradley, that's just DoD politics, nor because he got laughed out of the F-15 design committee... but because he was never on the F-15 design committee in the first place. He stormed their conference, threw some shitty hand-drawn blueprints of his V-22 on the table, and it was so bad he wasn't immediately removed by security, he was just laughed at, and THEN removed by security. And because of THAT, he waged his war on the Bradley.
This is the second time this week that I have to defend 3 Doors Down. Kryptonite is a good song
lmao another Mountbatten cameo
Rommel eulogising the brits like "forgive them lord, they must have amnesia for they forgot that im him"
The hallmark of a bad operation during ww2 , doesn't matter if it's France or Burma he's there always there being a pedophile .
Toby Keith died in February.
At least Allied fighter bombers almost killed Rommel
Y'all finally got the sammich question! Thank you, love a coney, but chicago dogs will always be my fav.
The Attention Deficit Duo strikes again and I LOVE IT. My brain fully works well with all the tangents. Thanks Joe for keeping it moving 😁
This is truly one of the LLBD episodes of all time
this is perfect. as someone who tours a lot, i really enjoyed the whole USO bit. i once toured with Bowling For Soup and their tour manager told me about a time they played on an aircraft carrier, and about how miserable the entire experience was
Do you get to take groupies with you on the carrier or do you have to find the groupies on the carrier?
Unfortunate fyi to this day there's still a Rommel Base of the german army. I actually live about 10km away lol. There's an insane attitude in the german army about Rommel where he's apparently an acceptable nazi(???). (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_Marshal_Rommel_Barracks,_Augustdorf)
Terry is my new favorite character
The episode where we learn Nate can do a decent Ian Paisley
Leftover Crack would also be a good suggestion because they also had an album cover of the twin towers being covered in gasoline called "Fuck World Trade".
See I was going to say Choking Victim
Killing Rommel was one of my favorite books in high school!! 👏
This is Xzibit slander. Paparazzi is definitely spittin'. His verse on Dre's "What's the Difference" too.
Ehhhh... I feel like if he had more integrity, he would have realized what a bad idea doing a symphonic metal song with Within Temptation was (it's called "And We Run" and it's real!)
If you ask the Dubliners, Lord Nelson's statue was Ireland's first astronaut
Started for Rommel, stayed for Tim Westwood
Toby Keithmetheus — worst Greek myth ever
Toby Keith is actually dead now.
Skoal will put cancer in your gut, it's the American way.
The more I hear about British military actions the more that one colonel going grenade kamikaze into a pillbox on the Falklands makes perfect sense
Commando operations during WW2 were hilarious. A couple brilliant successes(like the heavy water sabotage) in a vast sea of miserable failures.
I half expected that NASA funded experiment where they had a research assistant live in a flooded house with a dolphin to try to teach it to talk. The dolphin kept trying to bang her and then someone had the brilliant idea to make them take acid. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jun/08/the-dolphin-who-loved-me Or the Navy project I conflate with the above NASA story about using dolphins to detect hazards: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/22/us-navy-dolphin-fleet-black-sea
I loved anti flag and goddamn justin sane ruined it all
Still mad about this. I had been listening to them for decades.
To give you an idea of Tim Westwood, Sacha Baron Cohen based Ali G off him
“Operation Eagle Boner” We should have a listener competition to outline this war
For Fox's sake
Y’all done killed Toby Keith with this one
I have family in Belfast and Tom's Ulsterman accent had me in tears. Felt like I'd been flashbanged and now I want an Ulster Fry
I snort laughed at the Ulsterman takes.
With a name like this i was expecting bomb dolphins
I was more thinking penguins of Madagascar
