Little Knight Light post
Hey y’all so this week I took another go at designing a character for Knight Light that I had long wanted to figure out but just hadn’t nailed down. Now with most things I do I always allow myself the freedom to iterate if I’d like so this isn’t necessarily “final” but it gave me a nice image to work off of when making notes and other things.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the story of KL and how it’s evolved since I initially came up with the idea 4 years ago. The main theme of Light vs Dark is still central but beyond that, exploring themes of loss, grief, and despair but also hope, bravery and overcoming fears. This story is a vehicle in a way to think a bit about these topics and interact with them. But beyond these more broad stroke ideas I’ve been dialing in a little on the more A to B of it all and what the general narrative might be. If you know me well you may know how much I really love non-linear and indirect storytelling. I love when I can observe a world in a game or whatever medium it may be that tells me something about that world or invokes thoughts and questions about things. A loose thread pulling me from start to finish but never beating me over the head with every little detail. I want to discover things myself, piece them together, craft theories and make assumptions. The idea of things existing in these worlds long before the time of the game itself is great. Games like Hollow Knight (which many know is a big inspiration for KL) the Dark Souls series and other FROMSOFTWARE games, Journey etc are all very much my vibe.
So with Knight Light I do intend for their to be a main narrative of A to B but along that path I want to enrich the world and the environments with tidbits of past stories or side plots via environmental storytelling, NPC characters, notes and all manner of stuff.
Now this doesn’t have much to do with the art here today but in regards to this art I wanted to find a style that I could use when concepting out new characters that would allow me to keep consistency, be nice to look at and also not be so over rendered that it couldn’t be adapted to whatever the actual game would look like. So with these I did a take on the Knight himself, an old NPC design from last year and the new character.
I think this works for me at least for now and I hope between the notes, ideas and art I can continue to inch ever closer to making this a thing. I’m currently working with some nice folks on a very small game (I’m doing art, yay!) but trying to learn what I can and see where it takes me and hopefully I can apply these things to this project when the time comes. Anyways I hope y’all enjoy the rambling, I’ll be back soon with proper Patreon updates!

Very nice. Have you though about names for these guys? Or would they more have titles, like Duke, or Page (for the NPC)?
I haven't thought much about names actually as I'm pretty bad at them and also I don't want to get hung up on them when I can just use default terms and keep the notes going if that makes sense. But I will most likely use a mix of titles and regular names. Sort of like Souls games
