Food is also a symbolic thing. A symbol for power and control. You see it in Tarantino movies all the time, where the only character to survive to the end is the character who takes other people's food at the beginning. When L is eating he is in full control. When L is playing with his food, he is unsure of himself.

Aaron, Ryuk DID in fact tell Light that if he gave up ownership of the death note he would lose all his memories in the very first episode, so that's kind of a bad example lol.
