No he was literally a father. His first companion in the original run was his granddaughter Susan.
I think the line about him being a father is just a reminder about everyone he's lost. It's not just all of his people that are dead, but all of his family as well. This episode isn't well loved because it is a little silly but I always found it charming. Can't wait for you guys to see the next two episodes! Loved your reactions as usual!
Oh thank god. We're through the chuffa and getting to the good stuff. The finale here is the start of a much more consistent Who.
FUN FACT: During the time of the London Olympics It was Matts Smiths Time as the Doctor so he actually got to be the torch bearer for a length of the route. not entirely sure if it was because this episode but its a fun connection from the tv to a real life event
