(Erenel Gazetteer) Languages
Erenel Campaign Setting Update! If playing/running games inside Erenel, check out the many included root languages and dialects. If not, the language barrier system might be something you want to include in your home games!
World Anvil Article: Erenel Languages
Erenel languages are comprised of a root language and multiple dialects. If you understand a dialect under a root language, you can speak, read, and write all dialects under that root language to a degree, with a successful language barrier check. When learning languages, players learn the dialect, not the root language.
Some languages with a divine or alien origin may not include multiple dialects, thus preventing a language barrier check. When learning languages without dialects, the player learns the root language.
When attempting to communicate with a dialect you are not fluent in, which falls under the same root language, you make a language barrier check. If trying to shroud your voice to sound like a local of the region, a deception check is made after a successful language barrier check.
Variant Languages
Some Erenel languages have parallels to 5E languages from the PHB. If playing in Erenel and your subclass provides a language, use the chart included in the article to match Erenel’s language to the PHB. For many common languages, such as Dwarven or Orc, there is no parallel.
Most Erenel languages are based on region and not race. An Orc born in the Northlands wouldn't speak the same language as an Orc born thousands of miles away in Ulkadia.
