Gnomes | 5E Species Expanded

Interested in playing as a Timekeeper Gnome and becoming an architect of the impossible? Check out the revised species by downloading the PDF below or by visiting Erenel's World Anvil.

I'm a fan of the new 5E rules, but when it comes to species lore, many areas feel underdeveloped - especially gnomes. While their mechanics are solid, their lore often boils down to little more than tinkering. Check out this revised take on gnomes that I'll be incorporating into the Erenel campaign setting. It also includes the Timekeeper Gnomish Lineage option which intertwines gnomes with the flow of time itself.

“Time is not a river, nor a wheel. It is a fire, flickering with every moment we take for granted. And long ago, one of our own tried to master its flame.”
- Call of the Chronoguard

The Timewright Hourglass

The Timewright Hourglass was not the work of gods, it was the life’s work of a single Gnome, Merrin Quillock, the Timewright. A genius artificer, Merrin was obsessed with understanding the nature of time. He theorized that time was not a linear force but a malleable essence, something that could be slowed, sped up, or even rewritten. In secret, he crafted the Timewright Hourglass, a device designed to regulate time’s flow, preventing paradoxes and ensuring the past, present, and future remained stable.

But something went wrong.

During its activation, the Timewright Hourglass shattered under its own power, sending fragments of time itself spiraling across Erenel. These fragments created Temporal Scars, places where time bent unnaturally, some trapping people in endless loops, others creating echoes of past and future events. Realizing the catastrophe he had unleashed, Merrin vanished, leaving behind only cryptic notes and the last, largest fragment of the hourglass, now hidden by the Chronoguard.
