In the books they explain that the people that made the map were Lupin, James, Serious and Peter. They were all best friends and they had nicknames which were Moony, Prog, Padfoot and Wormtail. They were called “The Maruders” which is why the map is called “The Marauders Map” and why Lupin already knew what the map Harry had was.
