The fragility of a psychology unable to incorporate mortality is fascinating stuff. I enjoyed your soliloquy and you can add Britian to that list, the anglosphere in general just can't hack it. This same idea appeared in Ballard's Empire of the Sun/Kindness of Women autobiographicals that I recently read. Both BTF imo but if I know anything about this channel's taste, the less conceited latter is more appreciable. Why 16:54 isn't the thumbnail, I'll never know. Nearly spat my tea over the screen. 😂

Oh wow I’ve never heard of that book! Sounds like a great Sunday afternoon read ;) If you want more “wow” factor and deeper insight from Amado, you should check out Capitães da Areia (Captains of the Sand). It tells the story about a group of children that are homeless and that struggle to survive on the streets of Salvador. The book had a such a big impact due to its social criticism that the dictatorship ordered the books to be burned on the street, and Amado was arrested for “propagating communism”. It is a very raw and moving read, so I definitely recommend it. It’s one of the books we have to read in school :) Another book of social criticism is Cacau, which tells the story of the cacao plantations in Bahia. Gabriela and Dona Flor books are also great, and they were very shocking at the time for discussing polygamy and sexual freedom, plus having the main characters being women :))
