The opening scene of Dune is hair-raising. I also remember a section where Herbert goes into the heads of a lot of different people who are in a large conference meeting. Dune Messiah is probably worth reading, but the rest of the books are not necessary, IMO.
Important to point out that the story of Dune is complete only after reading Dune Messiah. The best part is that the sequel has only 200 pages!
goths and my response was: you say that like it’s a bad thing! The only science fiction I like better is Book of the New Sun.
Have you ever tried any China Mieville?
I loved the new movie. A fellow Dune fan described it as “Star Wars for
Science fiction and fantasy never fails to amaze me at how many hidden jams of literature there are. Like Dune and it’s brilliant sequel (the next ones are not that brilliant IMO) to China Mieville political ridden gritty surrealism, George Martins brilliant gritty court drama with fantasy elements (Game of Thrones) to philosophical musings of Le Guin, Wolfe and Bakker, brilliant magical realism of Suzanna Clarke, humanity and social commentary of Terry Pratchett and sheer joy of escapism in Lord of the Rings.
Great review as always Cliff. Sci-fi ain't my thing either but you made this seem thoughtful and relevant. You mentioned liking William Gibson so assuming Neuromancer, basically the inventor of the cyberpunk genre.
Never seen either version of Dune but I am glad that you read the book and gave a review. It made me want to read this book. I liked some science fiction that's entertaining and interesting. Thanks for this review. Enjoyed it very much.
You say you want to read SF where "everyone is a complete neurotic and everyone is unsure of themselves." That's why Crom gave us Philip K. Dick.
I am pleasantly surprised you liked it. I have read it twice and it's one of these weird books that I didn't always enjoy it while reading it but I am very glad to have read (and reread it) afterward. Definitely a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I do wish I had never gone on to the sequels though. I went through the fourth book, God Emperor of Dune (which amps the weirdness up to 11), and now wish I had just let "DUNE" tell its story and then moved on.
Dude, 5 minutes ago I was desperately bored looking for YouTube videos to fill my chasmic boredom and went to patreon to see if you upload the Dune review yet. Was in the middle of watching your TBR video and I got a notification for this video. Thanks for proving gods existence mate
Anytime man, thanks for your support and watching.
