Better Than Food - 162

Good evening everyone, hope this finds you well.

Still working through Crime and Punishment (approx halfway), considering a 2 part review. Also just finished Artaud's 'A Sinister Assassin' which will be coming soon - That was a strange one. Very unique.

Here's some stuff for the weekend, have a great one.

1. Twilight - William Gay

A kind gift from the author Dana Patrick Kelly.

This is a Southern Gothic tale about a demented undertaker who has not been burying the dead as he should.

The author William Gay was an interesting recluse who didn't publish until he was in his 50's.

2. She's My Witch - Kip Tyler and the Flips

Found this awesome 50's rockabilly track the other day. Love this guy.

Never heard him before.

3. One of My Favorite Film Intros

David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve in 'The Hunger'.
Great film directed by Tony Scott, the same fellow who directed 'Top Gun'.

4. Cat People
Speaking of horror films involving David Bowie...

Saw the original but not this one.

Natassja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell?

Soundtrack by Giorgio Moroder, Italian Synth Legend? (and David Bowie?)

Directed by Paul Schrader, writer of Taxi Driver?

How have I not seen this?
Fixing asap.

5. Tom Waits interview 1979
Hysterical.

William Gay's novels and stories are exceptional. I saw a video on Thomas Wolfe that included an interview with him. Not sure where to find it, but the whole thing was excellent.

Hey buddy. Hope you’re doing well! Looking forward to your Crime and Punishment review! It definitely deserves a 2 parter! I read it in 1985, and I’ve been wanting to do a reread. Trying to decide which translation to do this time. Bless you Clifford.

There is an incredible reddit post about English Dostoevsky translations in r/dostoevsky. You'll find it easily. Hope that helps. I didn't love Crime And Punishment. Maybe it was the translation (Rahsin)... I think more that D would have needed an editor and cut that book 10-15% shorter than it is. It's a good book, but his other works are better. Still love White Nights.
