Better Than Friday - 148

Good evening ya'll, recently got back from the Shakespeare festival and, well, it finally happened: I have Covid 19. Joy.

A big thanks to all of you who sent well wishes.

No idea where it happened but oh well. Not bad. Just a heavy cold/fever. Sure takes you out though. Totally worth it. Had a great trip. Below are some highlights...

Have a good weekend - Happy 4th of July

1. Next review - The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler

Classic L.A. Noir Detective fiction. Ultra-sharp cutting clever lines. The film adaptation with Bogie and Bacall is legendary. I've decided Humphrey Bogart is my favorite actor.

--------------------------------------

A dying millionaire hires private eye Philip Marlowe to handle the blackmailer of one of his two troublesome daughters, and Marlowe finds himself involved with more than extortion. Kidnapping, pornography, seduction, and murder are just a few of the complications he gets caught up in.

2. Dr. No

First Bond film. Connery, the suavest. Loved this. Considered one of the greatest I believe. Great set design too. Author of the Bond series books Ian Fleming also had a friendship with Raymond Chandler.

3. Winery in Ashland Oregon

After nearly having a flat tire on the highway and getting it changed in the nick of time, we made it for the last hour this place was open.

The view looks like Spain. Beyond beautiful. Very friendly people. Terrific food and wine. Highly recommended if you get to the area.

4. Chilean Stoner/Psych Rock: La Hell Gang

I decided this was our theme song for our Southern Oregon adventure.

5. One of the Most Astounding Airbnbs I've Ever Stayed In

I can't emphasize how uniquely immaculate this space was. The pictures, while impressive, probably don't do it justice. There's nothing like going to sleep and waking up with the ocean. I wanted to stay for the rest of my life.

Photo by Lynn, right before the show started. Very cool being outside for the performance. Birds, fireflies, airplanes off in the distance. Great atmosphere.

Love the Shakespeare festival! Back in high school our English class offered a school trip to attend. Very memorable.

I was lucky enough to get a season pass to OSF one year. Got to see Julius Caesar nine times that season (among a few others.) Absolutely amazing place.

Hope you are feeling better. I got it in April after managing to outmaneuver it for two years. Actually just read The Big Sleep last month. My first Chandler. While I enjoyed it, I had to constantly remind myself that it read almost like a parody of the noir, hard-boiled detective novel because it IS the original that would later be parodied so often. And have to admit I am a Bond nerd. I've read all the Fleming Bond novels and watched the films multiple times. They can both be cheesy at times but since I am an old man stuck in a 36 year old's body I enjoy them. It's hard to imagine today how much the books and films opened an escapist window into a world that most people never got to see before the internet and international travel became commonplace. Bright and sunny Jamaica would have seemed very exotic to someone living in cold and dreary England in the 1960s.

I had Covid in September of last year. It was awful. I hope you recover quickly.
