Better Than Friday - 143

Good evening everyone!

Hope all is well. We just got back from a trip to Hood River Oregon (see #3) which was terrific. Wish we could live there.

Hope this finds you well and heading straight into an exceptional weekend, whether you're staying or going.

1. A Book I'll be reviewing soon - The Pilgrim Hawk by Glenway Wescott

Never heard of it, but it has blurbs on the back from Susan Sontag and Samuel R. Delaney. I'm sold.

-----

This powerful short novel describes the events of a single afternoon. Alwyn Tower, an American expatriate and sometime novelist, is staying with a friend outside of Paris, when a well-heeled, itinerant Irish couple drops in—with Lucy, their trained hawk, a restless, sullen, disturbingly totemic presence. Lunch is prepared, drink flows. A masquerade, at once harrowing and farcical, begins.

A work of classical elegance and concision, The Pilgrim Hawk stands with Faulkner’s The Bear as one of the finest American short novels: a beautifully crafted story that is also a poignant evocation of the implacable power of love.

2. Aurat

L.A.-based darkwave band led by a Pakistani American woman who sings in Urdu.

3. Hood River Oregon

Spent a couple of days here, stayed at the Hood River Hotel, and ate at the glorious restaurant attached to it - Broder Øst.

Had this dish called 'Unipurro', a Finnish barley porridge with roasted pears - Fucking stupendous. I need to learn how to make it.

Also had the pleasure of visiting Hiyu winery. Amazing food and wine.

4. Michael Gira (lead singer of SWANS) - The Knot

This is a collection of stories from his notorious book that I've reviewed 'The Consumer', as well as many (or all?) of the songs he's written. Fantastic.

Available now signed. Beautiful looking book.

I bought it.

5. Mike Tyson; Impressive History Buff

He could probably teach a great course on the mindset of world conquerors or write a book. I'd read it.

The view from our bed.

For some reason, I had trouble sleeping.

(just kidding)

I love Hood River. It would be ideal to live there, or Astoria. I just moved out of SE Portland to St. John’s. St. John’s has a coastal town vibe I feel. But nothing quite as romantic as Astoria/Hood River
