Better Than Friday - 138

Good evening everyone, how goes?

The attached photo is of a publication that just arrived in the mail from the kind poet

Tim Grayson.

It features my very first published work - ever. Just some short simple reviews.

I never thought the first thing I'd have my writing published in would look so excellent. Hats off to him and Fox Books.

1. Currently Reading - The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Great, but goddamn this one is grim even for me.

McCarthy is in the ether right now with the recent announcement of his forthcoming books being published by Knopf, so I figured I should catch the hell up. It's taken me long enough.

-------------------------------------------------

A searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other’s world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

2. Because I Had To

We are 138.

We are 138.

We aaaaarrre 138.

3. Warm Leatherette

A rendition of a classic inspired by J.G Ballard's 'Crash' with some familiar faces.

4. Food and Shoes - The essentials according to Cormac McCarthy

Supplementary material for the coming review. I feel it must be easily one of the most famous interviews with an author in history.

5. Wallace Stevens Reads his poems

Now THAT is a reading voice.

I am going through and reading some of my favorite authors in order of publication and McCarthy is one of those select few. I still have a way to go to get to The Road but would like to read them all before I tackle his new releases this year. At his age, they may be the last we get.

I read All The Pretty Horses years ago and finally picked up Blood Meridian and The Road. All these young men immersed in trauma and violence, haunting, the unknown, prophecies by madmen… It makes me look at my grandparents (deceased) in a different way. Wondering about their parents, and their parents…this generational trauma sits somewhere in us all

Dude, you have to read Cormac McCarthy's 'Child of God'. You'll love it. It's completely warped, but also fucking hilarious. It's quite a short book too - about 180 pages.

Congratulations on the publication, man! That journal LOOKS amazing . . . Thanks for the McCarthy interview, and the audio of the Stevens reading! Different lifestyles but I think Stevens got it just about right: his office work as "well paid drudgery," I think he said, which allowed him to write and keep his head above water financially? He said something to that effect . . . Looking forward to your review of "The Road"! Is it the best book of the 2000s so far? Might be my favourite.
