Miracle of The Rose, next time you’re in France, go to Fontrevrault, allow your viewers some true insight. “Of all the state prisons in France, Fontrevrault is the most disquieting. It was Fontrevrault that gave me the strongest impression of anguish and affliction, and I know that convicts who have been in other prisons have, at the mere mention of its name, felt an emotion, a pang, comparable to mine. I shall not try to define the essence of its power over us....” - opening lines by Genet. Visiting the abbey-turned-prison gave me such a better understanding, not unlike visiting the Frank’s Secret Annex. It brought it back home, it intensified the escape of the act of reading.
Agreed. It could have been better. At least it was something and good reason to take it down.
Cliff, also, where’s Jean Genet? I remember you had Funeral March up, now it’s gone, or at least I can’t find it.
I think I deleted it because I thought I could do it better. More Genet one day.
4.48 Psychosis — by, Sarah Kane; Ice — by, Anna Kavan.
I got some money, Cliff, told you I’d pay you before I die: Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis and Anna Kavan, my friend....they should be a challenge, don’t you think?
I'll look into them both, thanks for the recommendations! Any titles in particular you'd recommend I start with?
incredibly quotable review, more prose in this than king ever wrote in his life
The Stand is simply bloviated, made for TV melodrama, dressed up as a Hallmark Halloween greeting card as are most of King's works. He is made for mass consumption much like a McDonald's Happy Meal....It might be filling but lacks in substance and taste.
Maybe it's the same with nearly every writer being so productive as King is: you can't keep up the quality level. I would rather wait and let time work for me, before writing another book every year. Pynchon for example is a master of making himself rare.
Shame to hear the stand isn't well received. Never really read anything by Stephen King other than the long walk.
To think I almost picked this up instead of Gravity’s Rainbow... which somehow i feel is probably more timely anyway.
I've avoided reading The Stand for years due to suspicions which you just validated. 1400 pages for a silly Christian Allegory for Dummies? Hard pass. I'd rather just read the Bible cover to cover.
I'm right there with you.
Youda man. I enjoy seeing you “pissed” off at books. You bring valid criticisms to the table and offer them thoughtfully. This review is better than food.
