Faust by Goethe
One of the most famous works of German literature by one of the most famous German authors. Not my favorite, but the first part is pretty solid.

Gotta be honest, I felt the same way about "The Brothers Karamazov." So far as I can tell, there's good reason for "The Grand Inquisitor" being the best known and loved aspect of that book (never got far past that in most of my attempts at tackling the book).
I shall recommend a book by Thomas Mann, but not the one you might think (which, of course, is DOCTOR FAUSTUS, which I also recommend.) He wrote one called THE BELOVED RETURNS, subtitled "Lotte In Weimar," about Goethe fanboys who seek the real-life model for the love-interest in THE SORROWS OF WERTHER. I only read the first third, but it was very funny. Mann had a comic sense.
Mann's Doktor Faustus might be my all-time favorite novel. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Great pick for the holidays
