Henry Miller, Tropic of Capricorn (not Cancer) and Black Spring, "The Tailor Shop". Laughter, release. David Sedaris and Woody Allen: Without Feathers! Fucking hilarious use of allusion to high-brow lit.
The most emotional reading experience I had was with Knausgard's first book of the "My Struggle" series. I laughed, cried, thought, felt and was genuinely absorbed by his writing. I didn't laugh because this book is necessarily funny, even though it definitely has it's comedic moments, but because I thought: "Oh man, I know what you are talking about!". Knausgard made me remember and re-experience the heights and downs of my own life... which are in some cases downright funny when I look back at them.
Boris Vian "Heartsnatcher" surreal, grotesque sometimes brutal but hilarious
A guilty pleasure of mine are the writings of Joe R. Lansdale. I learned of him because one of his short stories was made into a film: "Bubba Ho-tep" starring Bruce Campbell. A fun short story by him is "Godzilla's 12 Step Program" which is included in High Cotton. Another good one in that collection is "Steppin' Out, Summer." http://www.worldcat.org/title/high-cotton-selected-stories/oclc/43662095&referer=brief_results
Anthony Bourdain is one author that had me laughing pretty good, when he started talking about porn in Kitchen Confidential in particular. One short story that has stuck with me though is Parker's Back by Flannery O'Connor
Probably obvious, but Portnoy's Complaint might be the funniest book I've ever read.
“We all have different artists or different writers that speak to us at different points in our lives” So true.
Hunter S Thompson the one dude that brought me to tears with laughter in fear and loathing in Las Vegas .
Hell of a way to start my day, keep em coming man
An obvious choice but Catch 22 had me laughing out loud
Dostoevsky is actually very comedic in between the multi-chapter long speeches on God and suffering. The Peavear-Volokhonsky translation of The Brothers Karamazov really preserves this from the original russian. There's also an amazing story towards the beginning of War & Peace where one of the main characters and his friends tie a policeman to a bear.
Also I cannot recommend Anton Chekhov's short stories enough. I recommend them all but the story Gusev is about death so I'm sure you'll love it.
