Better Than Friday - 329

Good evening everyone, how's it going out there?

Shooting the review for Didion's 'Play It As It Lays' next week - Certainly a book for the era.

Wishing you a relaxing weekend with a good book.
Thank you so much for continuing to help the show, can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

  1. Contemporary fiction to read: Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico (Paid Link)
A portrait of vacuous 'creatives' in Berlin.
I don't read much contemporary fiction but I've been told this was pretty good - anybody read it? What did you think?

  2. Karl Ove Knausgard on BBC
Nice to see him getting attention. I haven't read any of his newer books, anybody had the pleasure? Any thoughts? Still need to finish the "My Struggle" series.

  3. A Young Patrick Modiano Interview
Discussing his book 'La Ronde de Nuit', whose narrative suggests the Occupation of Paris during the 40s. My friend and patron Shubha recently reminded me that I've gotta read more by Modiano, a French author who won the Nobel Prize in 2014.
I've only reviewed "Out of the Dark".

  4. 8 Eyed Spy w/ Lyida Lunch - 'Diddy Wah Diddy' NO WAVE version

A Captain Beefheart cover. So good. Album version is terrific too. Never really got into Beefheart but the original is great as well.

  5. Romper Stomper

Saw this long ago. A brutal Australian film about a lowlife neo-nazi gang, with Russell Crowe as the lead. A harrowing depiction of self-destructive hatred. Crowe was so convincing that a rumor went around that he was an actual skinhead recruited for the film, as can be seen in this clip, wherein he informs us that for his next role, he played a gay plumber. Love that guy.

"The School of Night" as the latest part of the Morning Star Series was my first Knausgard, and I really can recommend it for readers who are consciously looking for cracks in the surface of their routine perspective on the world. The last 4 pages are the most disturbing stuff I have read for the last years. The task now is to dive into the Morning Star universe chronologically (although the School can be "enjoyed" on its own, no doubt).

Nice, I'll have to pick that one up. Thanks for your thoughts Darius!

I have really enjoyed Knausgaard’s new series. I agree with J. here that one of them (the second in the series) needed some editing down. I’m very much looking forward to reading the new English translation release and am HIGHLY anticipating the translation of the next in the series after that which has already been published in the original language. I think there will be at least 7 books in the morning star series. The first novel ends with a long fictional essay about Bataille written by one of the characters in the book. Really interesting. Perfection is also on my list. Bracing for the blizzard here in the DC area. Always look forward to the Friday newsletter. Cheers!

Awesome - Wow didn't know he wrote about Bataille, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for your thoughts and kind words Benjamin, be safe up there, stay warm!

Knausgaard’s recent series has been very good—with the exception of one that was in need of an edit.

Thanks for your thoughts J., I'll have to pick it up. Which was the one that could use an edit?

“Perfection” is great. I loved the impermanence reflections and how the couple “missed” movements and politics worth their passion. Unsettling read as a millennial who works from home 😵‍💫
