Better Than Friday - 301

Happy Fourth of July everyone, hope you're having a good one.

Thank you so much for helping me keep the show going.

1. Book I'd like to read "The Thirty Years War" by C. V. Wedgwood (Paid Link)

Disclaimer: the publisher NYRB sometimes sends me free books for review

A book about the thirty years war between the Protestants and the Catholics.

Sounds like a horrific but fascinating period of history.

2. Roman Yampolskiy on Joe Rogan

Pairs well with the entry below.

3. The Intro from Terminator 2: Judgment Day directed by James Cameron

One of the greatest cinematic intros.

The monolithic titan of action films.

Good 4th of July viewing.

4. The Bug - Hammer

Sick track. For fans of Death Grips.

5. Days of Being Wild directed by Wong Kar Wai

I remember this scene from time to time.

Excellent cinematography by Christopher Doyle.

I was kindly invited by friend and patron Andrew to go see the regrouped southern metal outfit Acid Bath last week.

I was unaware of them until recently. Though they only released 2 albums in the 90's, they had an enormous influence. It was a sold-out show - a significant moment.

Here's a nice documentary on them from the channel Rock N' Roll True Stories.

Good call on T2, one of my favourite films. And Brad Fiedel’s score is powerful.

Very cool that you took the chance to see Acid Bath, as that is kind of a big deal. Unfortunately I don't believe they will be coming to the west coast so I'm a bit jealous. "When The Kite String Pops" is a landmark record in the genre.

That's a shame, yeah it's great stuff, I'm shocked I hadn't heard of them until recently.

Good morning from Portugal Mr. Sergeant. Regarding your recent review of Ted Kaczynski(great review btw), and Ted’s vision of escaping to a remote cabin in the woods and therefore the modern world; the book I am currently reading from Nicolás Gómez Dávila( dubbed the Nietzsche of the Andes, this comparision is in regards with his writing style not his philosophy), called “The Authentic Reactionary” . He defends the position that trying to run from the world and live off-the-grid is pointless. There are no solutions to the problems of the world. From the book’s introduction: “We cannot run away from the modern world; we cannot create a different kind of world within this one; we cannot create a different kind of world within this one; we cannot defeat the modern world through sabotage, terrorism, or any kind of political shuffling.” Dávila defends an inner retreat, as he described himself as a Pagan who believes in Christ. Dávila, like Ted, finds technology deplorable, in so much as it increases our power to kill and destroy; and emboldens the imbeciles of the modern age with an almost inconceivable amount of power at their fingertips. To finish my long post, I will leave you with this quote from Ernst Jünger: “Monstrous energies come to us, and what do we do with them? Instead of building a magnificent world and great utopias where, for instance, no one would have to work— we don’t even consider it, we use our (Aladdin’s) lamp to stockpile nuclear bombs.”

Good morning from Florida ViriatooofLusitania, thank you very much for your kind words. I haven't heard of Dávila, thanks for bringing him to my attention. That's a great Jünger quote. Sadly accurate.
