Better Than Friday - 290

Good evening everyone, hope you’re all reading something excellent. Heatin’ up down here.

I’m finishing up Emmalea Russo’s “Vivienne”, and enjoying it very much.

Thanks very much to you all for helping me get the word about great books out there.

Wishing you a relaxing weekend.

1. Book to read: Mademoiselle de Maupin by Theophile Gautier (Paid Link)

Paglia discusses this one in Chapter 16 of Sexual Personae.

The story of a man and woman who both fall in love with someone who is not what they seem.

I've not yet read Gautier, but this sounds great.

2. Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground

Listened to this the other day and was shot back in time hard.

One of the best.

3. Gabrille Wittkop Interview

The auto-translate English subs are a bit disordered, but I found her thoughts about the Tiger and Sade compelling.

4. A conversation between Jim Jarmusch and David Cronenberg in Interview Magazine

An interesting, though slightly dispiriting, conversation between two great filmmakers, minutes after the news came out that David Lynch had passed away.

5. Faulkner's 1 paragraph review of Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea'

Well put, no?

Today, on my short video review of 'Leaving Las Vegas' by John O'Brien, I received a nice comment from Erin O'Brien, John's sister. Made my day.

John's sister Erin, finished his uncompleted novel he was working at the time The Assault On Tony's from his notes he made before his passing. A great novel that I haven't read it in twenty years or so but always meaning to. I highly recommend it. When I read Leaving Las Vegas for the first time so many years ago, I fell in love with the loneliness, despair and beauty of that novel and it's characters. I've reread it countless of times since then. After reading that novel, I read whatever I could find- Stripper Lessons, The Assault On Tony's . All sharing a similar theme of loneliness, emptiness, sadness but with a dash of sardonic humor. His last novel Better in which I just recently discovered, is the only book I haven't read. I sure do miss him too Erin.

Thank you very much for all that info Bruno. I'll be sure to look into "The Assault on Tony's". I think I'd read about Erin finishing the novel but forgotten. What an honorable action. Glad you discovered and developed such an appreciation for John O'Brien.

Great stuff. Curious—where’s this John O’Brien vid? Didn’t see it come up on my feed
