The Obscene Bird of Night by José Donoso (Patron-Only Early Access / Ad-Free)
A mystifying Latin American tale of Black Magical Realism.
The closest thing to madness I've seen portrayed on the page.

A remarkable experience, surviving which I only dimly remember—but I read that Verba Mundi translation & will need to revisit in this new, unexpurgated form. Makes me wonder if Donoso was familiar with the Schreber Case upon reflection? Freud’s monograph is a minor classic.
Nice - Interesting observation, I wonder. Wouldn't be surprised if he was. I'm not familiar with the case myself, thanks for mentioning, I'll have to look into it.
Great review 👏🏽
Thank you very much Marjorie!
As I understand it the older english edition cut out a significant amount of content and even made changes to the structure to make it more palatable which is kind of wild to think about. I’ve got the spanish edition lined up and now I’m really interested in comparing it to both english editions. Good stuff!
Interesting, thanks very much for all.
