The NADDPOD Duality of going from talking about shitting one's self and then talking about the god side of one's brain and the morality of man.

NOBODY tell them that there are both black widows and rattlesnakes on the east coast! And also yeah brown recluse spiders, copperheads, and cottonmouths are all very venomous and live over here too

Once again Caldwell's proving to be my spirit animal. Watching old Jib Jab videos with my dad as he poisoned my young mind lmao. What a reference Hugh.

Fuck man, the bicameral mind tangent is the trippiest conversation this podcast has ever had.

J

Fountain pens are actually awesome for art! If you're getting ink everywhere, I'm guessing you're actually using a dip pen, which isn't the same and is much more of a pain in the ass, lol. But yeah, fountain pens rock! And they're gorgeous. And they don't take up a lot of space, which is helpful for those of us who hoard our collections. 😂

The garde-robe actually protected the furs of the nobles. They would hang them in the 'clothing protector' and the stench wafting up from the crap below would keep moths and other vermin from infesting their furs. Yes, the rich stank even then...

And just like that I'm caught up to current after like two years of binging this show and the hundreds of episodes that precede this one. Absolute chef's kiss and I can't wait to experience the cutting edge of NADDPOD with everyone else. Now to start binging Dungeons and Daddies...

U
UndecipheredStones · September 29, 2026

The "shit out of the tower" room is not called a garderobe because you'd be shitting your pants otherwise, lmao. Give medieval people more credit. A "clothing protector" is a closet; it's a euphemism, exactly like "water closet", and a lot like "bathroom" or "restroom". (Even "toilet" is a euphemism; it used to be a term for personal grooming in general.)

r

The number of times in naddpod history that murph brings up shitting himself makes me... concerned? Was this event in his past more traumatic then he lets on? Is he looking for validation that it's ok?? Am I psychoanalyzing a random podcast creator with no context or authority?

A
Alexander Powers · September 28, 2026

I write letters by hand to my grandmother and find that I put more thought into my words because I have more time to sit and think about what I'm saying as I write. It might be a little more self-censored (I'm really not sure), but I think the careful consideration more than makes up for it. I'd definitely recommend trying writing letters to people by hand, it's for sure a different headspace than writing an email or typing out a text.

O
Ominous_Ellipsis · September 28, 2026

Unfortunately, Meow Mix already has a commercial where they have cats dancing and singing like Backstreet Boys. Also, mentioning the kingfisher quill reminded me of one of my favorite (extravagant) paintings by Albert Beirstadt called Mountain Brook. It is very beautiful but also has just the tiniest kingfisher in the middle and it's very cute :)

My household ADORES spiders. We have one nearly at all times hiding in the front gate, where there’s a nice little nook for building webs and hiding from the heat during the day. We always call them “the Doorman.” It’s bittersweet because when they get too big, they’ll go away and move somewhere else. But they always leave behind that last big molt as a souvenir of our time together. My favorite Doorman built the most magnificent web that looked like a cathedral, we never took down that web after she passed, the new Doormen have just built around and on top of it.

L
Little Cheese Confettis · September 26, 2026

Caldwell sent me down a rabbit hole with the bicameral mind theory. From what I can gather (and yall I’m NOT an academic please correct me if I’m wrong) this theory, originally published by Julian Jaynes in the 70s, really only makes sense if you also agree with Jaynes narrow definition of consciousness - that consciousness is not biological but in fact cultural, as in society encourages self-awareness and introspection. I personally think there’s a lot more to consciousness than that! But it was a fun rabbit hole

L
Little Cheese Confettis · September 26, 2026

Also even if you do agree with Jaynes definition of consciousness there are still many ways you could disagree with his bicameral mind theory - for instance there’s a lot of focus on the people living through the Bronze Age collapse but what about everywhere else???

We have black widows on the east coast and brown recluses lol. I live in Alabama and we also have 6 venomous snakes including multiple kinds of rattlesnakes. I grew up in a very rural area so cotton mouths copper heads and rattlesnakes were pretty common.

J
Joshua Saldana · September 25, 2026

Rattlesnakes are ambush predators. So, they are actually fairly docile creatures, especially when encountering larger creatures. If you’re too big to be food, they will only rattle/strike if they feel threatened. Otherwise they will likely hide. If you encounter one, running at/past them is probably the worst thing you could do; other than walking up to it and stepping on it. The best way to avoid them is just that - avoidance. If you encounter one, either take a very wide berth or wait for them to move on. If the peanut gland in our head activates and you don’t have a weapon and/or you feel you have no choice but to fight, the safest thing is to run (they are highly unlikely to chase you) or to kill them - a pincer (one person distracts by getting close enough to be a threat but far enough to be relatively safe while the other person ambushes them from behind with something sharp and behead them). But don’t get near the head because believe it or not, it’s still possible for them to bite for a short time after. End of the day, vigilance and staying out of foliage and debris. Predators (like birds) love a snake snack. So if the snake is out in the open, they either have a death wish or they’re trying to get somewhere. If you see something that looks like a gopher hole, avoid it because that’s their hidey hole.

h
henskate · September 25, 2026

There’s an orb weaver (I think) that lives inside the sideview mirror of my car. I often eat lunch in my car and she’s pretty frequently hanging out or doing repairs on her web while I’m eating. I’ve given her a fly or a beetle I’ve caught a couple of times. She’s super chill.

W

There are lots of pretty dangerous water snakes actually, cottonmouths/water moccasins were the big concern when I grew up but there were also coral snakes occasionally. And I guess the 2 I can think of isn’t “lots” but if you’re by water there’s lots of places for land snakes to hide.

From what I know about rattlesnakes, most bites happen when someone actually steps on one they didn’t see or something. Their prey is mostly just little rodents! They’re scared of you too! I think the most important thing is to just keep your eyes and ears open. Their lifestyle is quite slow since they spend a lot of time sitting in wait for prey (that means they probably don’t want to exert themselves unless they feel really threatened). Due to their slow metabolism they can live over 20 years! Unfortunately rattlesnakes have an undeserved bad reputation and have a history of being killed (often cruelly) in huge numbers in rattlesnake roundups :( which has lead to multiple US species becoming threatened/endangered… Did you know rattlesnake mothers have been observed to co-parent their young?! They are very cool and I love them (I’m not an expert)

W
Walker Thurman · September 25, 2026

Yeah if you just leave them alone you’re probably fine. Running past them or coming near them is seen as a threat bc you are huge to them Also the WANT you to notice them and walk away, that’s what the rattle is for

A
Akrilothian Gaming · September 25, 2026

So i have taken care of both rattlesnakes and spiders! You absolutely can put insects in soidera webs and its very entertaining to watch them wrap them up! And the "rattlesnake distraction" will not work they are pit vipers and actually sense body heat and will not strike at anything cold typically when we fed them frozen rats and mice at my old job we would have to heat them in the microwave to get them to eat them and they would often strike at us, the feeders, as we are a much more appropriate temperature tham the often over/under-heated mouse so unless you got a live mouse in your pocket PLEASE just back away

F
Fiver · September 25, 2026

When I was a kid I thought they were called pit vipers because they were the kind of poisonous snakes bad guys would put in, like, pit traps and stuff. Or maybe they lived in pits waiting for people to fall into. Luckily the real reason (the heat sensing pits on their heads) is similarly cool, so I wasn’t disappointed by the truth
