No idea if this will get seen but I am an actual real life professional lute player/baroque music specialist that does crossover stuff with renaissance/baroque instruments in other genres, straight up hit me up if you do a baroque campaign and want real baroque instruments because I have GOT you. Look up what a theorbo is and tell me you don't want to write for that thing. It would be my actual greatest honor and the ultimate peak of my personal/professional life to contribute lute playing to a NADDPOD campaign.

EMILY baroque is not basic if YOU make it. I’d love it and love the oops all bard idea as well. The fact Emily herself makes the music is one of the many things that makes this podcast so unique. Making music YOURSELF and being creative with it will come across as authentic and unique which is the opposite of basic to me.

A suggestion for Emily. It wouldn't surprise me if you've already heard of this band, but if you want some inspiration for what to do with baroque, give Malice Mizer a listen. Their whole schtick is rock baroque. I recently started listening to them and they're a lot of fun. Similarly, much of the Castlevania soundtrack is kind of action oriented baroque.

wave shaaaaaaapes. one of the few things i know something about! (takes deep breath) all sound (really, *ALL* sound!) can be perfectly represented as complex collections of sine waves varying in pitch and volume over time. for a wave of any shape to repeat cyclically at a pitch (pick A4, which in concert pitch repeats 440 times per second, called 440 Hz), every sine wave that makes up that wave has to repeat at an integer multiple of the pitch. this is called the "harmonic series." So for A4, the fundamental (sometimes called the "first harmonic") is the pitch itself (440 x 1); the second harmonic is exactly double (880 Hz = 440 x 2), which is a perfect octave up; the third harmonic is at 1320 Hz (440 x 3); and so on. the relative volumes of these harmonics determine both the cyclic wave's visual shape and how it sounds. on to the question about what determines common cyclic wave shapes! Early analog synth designers (Alan R. Perlman, Bob Moog, Don Buchla) and the musicians they were working with (Elaine Radigue, Wendy Carlos, Suzanne Ciani) needed a mix of (1) wave shapes that were relatively simple to generate with the fairly primitive electronic components available at the time and (2) wave shapes that were musically distinct and useful. very remarkably, these two considerations align with each other and lead to the traditional complement of wave shapes. a square or pulse wave (signal jumps straight up and down) contains only odd harmonics, which has a hollow sound closest to a clarinet. a sawtooth wave (signal goes up in a straight line, then jumps straight down [ED: nick's description below is clearer, one side is gradual and the other is a jump]) contains a mix of even and odd harmonics and is both physically and sonically related to the way a bow (violin, viola, etc.) creates sound from a string. a triangle wave (up in a straight [ed: gradual] line, then down in a straight line) has relatively faint odd harmonics and sounds quite close to a flute (which, when played gently, actually approximates a sine wave). most analog synthesizers (even these days) start with a "core" that creates one kind of wave (often a triangle or sawtooth) and surrounding circuitry that creates other waveshapes, almost always including the traditional waveshapes, from them. it's a bit of a cartoon, but "east coast" synthesis (Perlman/Moog) typically starts with a complex wave (square or sawtooth) and removes harmonics (using filters) to make the wave it smoother and simpler. "west coast" synthesis (Buchla) starts with a simpler wave (triangle or sine) and does something called "wave folding", which actually adds harmonics to create increasingly complicated [passes out due to lack of oxygen]

N
Nick Lerche · September 7, 2026

Dude yes . Thank you for this-- and shout-out to Wendy! I love sound so much. You're right allllll sound. What makes things sound like themselves(timbre) is all of the frequency and amplitude of however many overtones. You ever seen where they take an audio clip and slowly release the high pass filter and it becomes a human voice, but before that it was a low sine wave? My only note on this is your description of a sawtooth is kinda almost a square wave, sometimes called a pulse wave. A sawtooth jumps to the peak and *gradually goes down til it reaches the lowest point and jumps back up to gradually sink and so on. But thank you for taking the time to explain for the curious ones!

Murph and Emily!! If you want to get your cat to go outside without freaking out here's what worked for us: 1) put JUST harness on cat and leave it on them for a few hours around the house. Do this a couple times a week. 2) once the harness is no longer instant nightmare, get a dog stroller. The kind that has a hood that can zip up and has see through and non see through cover options. 3) walk around neighborhood with your cat in the stroller. Have them clipped into the leash but let it stay loose unless needed. 4) if they seem to be comfortable with that, let cat free roam in the car (with harness on) BEFORE driving anywhere. Our cat did so much better in cars when we gave her time to explore before we started driving 5) take cat in public with stroller and have a grand Ole time

N
Nick Lerche · September 7, 2026

We did almost this exact thing except we have a Bubble Backpack rather than a stroller, but it's more for from house to car, and from car to our spot in the park, but once there it's just harness and the smallest thinnest retractable leash

Where's big city kids take it REALLY serious. Unfortunately more and more places are looking at alternatives to JET because it costs the local boards of education money to have JETs, and the wage just went up so they're looking at cheaper alternatives 😭😭x
