Exotic pet laws are slightly different in each state. An animal might be illegal in one state and allowed (with a permit, maybe?) in another. Would having a pet wallaby be adorable? Yes. Would I be able to provide it with the quality of life it would have in the wild? No. People with exotic pets (outside of most birds and reptiles found at a pet store) make my heart sad.

Also as a young person I have also had very bad problems with scrolling and the whole "I'm too tired to play games so I'm gonna scroll for two hours straight" so at this point I literally just started blocking TikTok on my phone so I would at least be forced to watch full length YouTube videos or something 😭

About the exotic animals, it's actually still legal in a lot of states to have them. Texas is one where there's a lot of big loopholes and you can even have primates. It's VERY NOT GOOD FOR THE ANIMALS 😭 please do not keep exotic pets unless you're a trained professional rehabilitating them.

I feel the “too tired to do anything but scroll” thing hard, I think it’s related to us getting so much information all the time it just exhausts us? One way I’ve dealt with it is playing mobile games. I’ve drastically reduced my scrolling but I’ll spend hours playing little puzzle games and candy crush knock offs. Which isn’t great, but I think it’s better than doomscrolling and feeling awful about the world?? Still need to figure out how to quit the mobile games when my brain has gotten a chance to rest.

From an experience of social media at least vaguely similar to Murph’s, I think doomscrolling for me is something I do when I do not want any new information or engagement or enrichment, but I do want something repetitive and pleasant that tells me it’s okay to be still and not think. I think it’s easy to demonize that desire because of how it’s exploited and encouraged, however I also feel weird any the whole “just go watch a criterion movie! Just go play an incredibly motivating and intricate game!” Idea. The thing I personally have found (for myself) that resembles doomscrolling is doing a repetitive task (knitting, washing dishes, walking, working with clay) while listening to something auditory that is comfortable to listen to. For others, obviously, this could be different, but I think what scrolling endlessly through media you don’t enjoy stimulates is that need to be doing a semi-something without having to do a whole-something, which is not a bad thing to want. But phones have been specifically designed to be just that little bit easier and more motivating to engage with than the vaguely pleasant, repetitive thing you’d also probably like to do if you really thought about it. So yeah, phones and algorithms and social media are inherently evil and exploitative, but our desire to use certain parts of them probably come from other places, and it’s different for every person where that motivation comes from and what alternatives could be.
