Halberds - why were they that shape?

You say this is a theory, infact your own theory -- Do we not have any kind of written source from the time describing the use of a Halberd?

I don't know of any written source for how they were used in dense formations in battle by ordinary footmen working as a group. I am less interested in nobles duelling.
