Enhancing photo's in the movies

Yes that IS an apostrophe in "photo's" which is an abbreviation of "photographs".  Most people don't bother with such things any more, but I still do.  You young folk have probably stopped, along with wearing galoshes and listening to the wireless.

Enhancing photo's in movies - what software are they using? (YouTube)

Great video. Software developer here. It is theoretically possible to aggregate several images together like that, but it actually won't give much more detail. It could only give more detail if the camera had far better optics and, somehow, was able to divide the image into pixels perfectly. You can film in 4K and post-process down to 1080p or 720p and probably do this, if you used a bad post-processing method that was designed specifically for this. But, the cheaper camera won't have the image clarity needed. Basically, if a small object is on the right edge of one pixel and moves a tenth of a pixel's distance farther right, so that it is now entirely in a different pixel, the camera needs to see that it moved from one pixel to the other. A cheap camera will blur it all, and it can't tell the difference between a sharp spot and a more diffuse color. There is a fundamental importance of being able to see the sharp line where one object ends and another begins. If that line is blurry, you cannot tell if it is a sharp line or a blurred gradient. Unless you force your software to artificially sharpen blurry spots, which may be useful but it technically makes the image worse. Combining several poor images would probably only give you better coloration. This would help, but it's probably the least useful thing for facial features. I'm not an expert on the subject, but I have worked a bit on image processing.

There are camera's today who know exactly how their lens works, enabling them to work out where the light from each pixel comes from in the real world, in turn allowing them to re-calculate the image to focus somewhere else. of course that only works if you have equipment that was designed to do that, but stil...

Don't worry, I still listen to BBC 4... not so sure about the galoshes though...
