I read the books and saw the promo pics. The book goes into a lot of detail in what they wore and how they carried themselves. When they chose to ignore dying the main actors hair blonde (as it was a key character descriptor) or even giving him a blonde wig kinda set up how hard they will probably try to keep authentic. Your analysis just confirmed it for me. The Bebbenburg Castle was supposed to be a lot higher and depended on a lot of its natural features. There is always a cheap, and quick way, to achieve these visual goals. There are a LOT of people who would volunteer solutions to a shot and scene in the story board, before money would have been invested in the costumes.
