Survey results
The results of the survey are in. Others like it are being done for other channels, and it will be interesting to make comparisons. The survey lasted one month and an astonishing 16,635 people filled in the survey.
Much of it confirmed what I already knew - you are almost all men. You are into science, technology, the outdoors, gaming, and education. Interesting was that you are mostly not into travel, which might explain why the travel videos don't do so well.
I see that the age profile of the people who filled in the survey is significantly younger (mostly 18-24) than the age profile of my YouTube audience (mostly 25-44). This could be because my keenest viewers are younger, or perhaps it reflects a possible fact that older people are sick of filling in surveys.
Less than 6% (of the biased sample that responded) minded my sponsorships or thought them inappropriate.
Most of my audience is not rich, and yet an astonishing 64% said that it was interested in buying Lindybeige merchandise. Tat ahoy!
24% of the responders were from the USA, 22% Britain, 8% Germany, 5% Australia, 4% Canada, and a whopping 38% from 'other' which were almost all non-English speaking nations. So, a huge proportion of my audience speaks English as a foreign language. I suspect the facts that I use short words and have clear diction probably help.
43% of you live in suburbs. I'm not sure what to do with that information. Videos about tree-lined avenues?
89% of you identified as 'white'. The people who devised the survey were American. For the rest of the world, this isn't much of an issue.
Actually, I see that 41% of you ARE interested in travel - fewer than half but still a fair few.
32% of those filling in the form described themselves as die-hard fans, and 49% as subscribers who watch a lot of my videos. My thanks go to all who filled in the survey, but perhaps especially to those who are *not* die hard fans.
62% said that they seldom comment or click 'like', and 34% that they fairly often 'engage' in this way.
Overall satisfaction was 8.95 out of 10! By Crikey!
84% were satisfied with the length of my videos. Again, of course, that's 84% of the sample of people who chose to fill in the survey, so it leaves me wondering how many people get put off by long videos.
The lowest satisfaction ratings were for frequency of videos. Alas this does not make it clear whether people want higher a or lower frequency, but I'm guessing higher.
Very few complaints about sound or picture quality - phew!
Thanks to all who participated. Obviously, I am not charging you anything for this post.

I wonder, now when you have 16k surveys, what you gonna do with all that info? How you gonna use it to improve your channel? No need to answer, it was just an out loud thought
Also missed the survey, but, for whatever its worth, I'm a 54-year old Californian who likes to travel, but can't afford to do it as much as I'd like to. Most of the You-Tube channels I subscribe to deal with history in one way or another, particularly historical tech - Drachenifel, C&Rsenal, British Muzzleloaders, etc. I like the long and winding vids, but more frequent short vids would be good as well. The best thing about your channel is it is so eclectic. History, travel, dancing, the occasional rant, all good stuff. Thanks for doing what you do.
Pretty good sign when the biggest complaint is "we want more!"
I missed the survey :( Anyway, I rather have just one good video per week than a bad one every day. Also, I usualy like the long ones more. I'm brazillian, gamer, 32 y.o. and I dont like travel very much.
I do look forward to a nice long Lindy video - especially one with lots of digressions...
I missed the survey, so you have my apologies. That being said, I would prefer more frequency of shorter videos (<20 minutes). I'm sure this is the case for many people here, but my days are quite busy, and with the other channels I follow, Netflix, having a life, etc., I simply have a limited amount of time to allocate each week, and an hour-long video puts a lot of strain on that.
My lady, who finds you quite interesting and looks forward to your stuff, likes the fact she is quite special.
I stand with Mark Persad and Edalwulf Bergmann I'd also like higher frequency of videos.
I'm with Edalwulf! Higher frequency good, lower frequency bad. By the by, very happy indeed with my Lindybeige mug, excellent merch not tat at all!
I've always wondered on what Youtube (and other sites like it) base their information on their users' age. Are they assuming that people... tell the truth? How wonderfully naive in that case. ;) (The same goes for gender btw.)
>The lowest satisfaction ratings were for frequency of videos. >Alas this does not make it clear whether people want higher a or lower frequency, but I'm guessing higher. I'll go on the record as saying that I'd rather have more videos, personally.
I consider myself a die-hard fan, but missed the survey. I shall blame the catastrophic destruction of my phone. I suspect I fall fairly well into the middle of most of your categories... I note that a disproportionate number of my YouTube subscriptions are to male British hosts. I suppose I am a bit of an Anglophile, as I would happily listen to most of you gents read the phone book.
