When and why do men run away in battle? A proposed scientific experiment.
This could be the start of something medium-sized, or it could be idle pondering. Why knows?
One of my longer sponsor messages, but the ridiculousness just kept on coming. Amazingly, the sponsor loved it!

Or tweak the bonus for winning upwards? People entering a battle are generally hoping for a victory and it's spoils right? (after not getting bashed or killed that is). Even if the spoils are just feeling "the adrenaline of victory" (which sounds like it should be a heavy metal album).
The idea is that there is no reward for running too early (only lack of penalty). Maybe it would be better if there was a minimal loss? Say minus half a share?
You are on to something and as a game designer you got my thoughts running. So I have a suggestion for your model? Lets say we have 2 sides of 100 combatants. Every player puts in $250 and this is divided into shares into a battle pool (maths to be confirmed).. The end of battle payout is as follows. Winning side : A survivor gets 3 or 4 shares. a dead winner gets 1 (maybe 2?) shares. Loosing side : A survivor looses 3 shares. A dead looser looses 1 share.. ..but the first 20 people to run away get off free. So people who see their side is loosing early and cut their losses get of scott free but those who stay a little longer, will pay the ultimate sacrifice (so to speak).. I think this should model tipping point pretty well? But may also model the fight like fuck to try and rescue this situation and cut our losses. Comments?
I don't think that would work. It rewards running early too much and once the first 20 have run, there is a sudden change of values, and the rout may often already be precipitated. It will take a bit of mathematical modelling and playtesting before I would try it for real.
It seems to me your method doesn’t have a reward for running and living. In a real battle there is a reward for running away it’s your alive. So even if your side runs away when if thing look bleak they live then tossing away their life’s. It just seems to me surviving really should pay the same as the side that wins. To my mind in war the goal is to live through it and if your going to die not waist your life. So I think to weigh the outcome and induce “ this is a time to run away” to live needs to be very valuable, to live and be captured is less valuable to die is no value. To win and die is no value . I see what your doing and I think this will work. This is my 2 cents or pence or what ever money we are using.
Each value will have to be carefully calculated and tested. If winning is worth nothing, no one will ever fight. Winning has to be worth risking dying for. Winning and dying is a net loss, certainly, but not as bad as losing and dying. There is a BIG reward for running and losing, which is that you don't pay the much higher fine for losing and dying.
They seriously called you the "Universal Before Photo"? I... I might need to buy a kit from DSC, because that's a genius idea, and deserves support, even if I've yet to use a razor a single solitary time in my life, and probably won't ever do it either.
I think I might have made that bit up.
Entirely unrelated - But where can one purchase a "Lloyd Rants" badge!?
