I'm throwing a party
Yes, I'm throwing a party, in Newcastle (upon Tyne, England) this Saturday August 19th. That's a bit soon isn't it? Yes, the late announcement is deliberate. Lots of people I know are coming, and the hall isn't massive so I couldn't cope with hoards of strangers rolling up, but a smattering of patrons would be welcome. I didn't want anyone to book a flight to get to it - it's not that special an event, but I'd like there to be more than just a load of local Lindy-hoppers there.
There will be a jazz band, some games, some booze, and the very loose theme is 'sharing the fun', so I'd want people to bring something to boost the pleasure of others. I don't want anyone to think that there's the slightest chance that they would be unwelcome if they have nothing much prepared, nor for the shy to think that they will have to perform to a crowd. Just anything that contributes in any tiny way to the pleasure of others would be nice. Perhaps you write a two-line poem, which I can read out in that voice I have. Perhaps you bring a single party popper and detonate it at an hilariously appropriate moment. Perhaps you bring along a board or card game, or just the knowledge of the rules of a game that is an absolute hoot for 2-78 players. Again, I await your excellent ideas. Cake, I'm told, is very popular.

ARGH!!! Why do these things never happen in Australia?! Frustration aside, i hope you have a night to remember. OH! i just had an idea for a party game. Ever heard of Aye Dark Overlord? if you haven't, look it up, it is a great game of blaming each other over who stuffed up the latest evil scheme (Or some completely trivial and absurd request that the overlord commanded) and avoiding the dark overlord's wrath.

Thanks for the invite. I'd love to attend but being that I live in Mexico it is a looonnnnggggg flight. Lindy, you are definitely a Renaissance sort of guy and an asset to the Crown. You should have a videographer or two take video of the function and post it. To break the ice: Rule #1 have everybody wear name tags... and where they are from or were from or want to be living. Beware of making any game too complex, people don't want to show their ignorance or stupidity which is inevitable when booze is involved. Oh yes, and costumes or, just a wig, are guaranteed to bring people out of the shell. Hmmmm, have a contest with the best Donald Trump impersonation. Hmmmm again, have a drawing to match people up and the cake has to be fed to the person whose name you drew. For this many people I'd stay on the simple and silly style of any game. Well, anyhoo, thanks for the invite. Just wish I was closer. Say hello to the Queen for me.
Had I not had other irrevocable plans this weekend I'd have definitely attempted to write a seductive email in attempt to secure a place (especially as I'm just down the road in Middlesbrough) but alas, maybe another time! Have fun! :)
