yeah, the attack on the bus of kids that got depowered after M-Day being one such reason (for those that don't know M-Day is when wanda; the scarlet witch, went a bit mad and rewrote reality using a spell that stripped about 90% of all mutants of their x-gene/power. The resulting comic run ''House of M'', was a marvel-wide event to undo the reality warp, they did, but they could not undo the power loss)
This show is mostly based on the original Uncanny X-Men comics (one of the, if not the, longest-running superhero comics of all time. It was confirmed in Uncanny X-Men #431 (2003) that she is indeed his biological child born from an affair with a woman named Suzanna Dane. The Comics apparently retconned Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being his biological children.
That's a bs retcon that I think was supposedly done because Disney who still didn't have the movie rights to X-Men couldn't use mutants so allegedly that was a reason for the retcon

To answer Ant's question: No, being a Horseman for Apocalypse means that u are fully operating under his control. U have no free will nor memories. The power of love has nothing to do with anything. In the original series, Angel became Archangel because Apocalypse turned him into a Horseman and was under his influence. The only reason why Archangel regain his freedom and memories, is because of Rogue using her powers to break hold. Which nearly killed her. Archangel in X-men 97 directly brought this up in Episode 2 this season. The only way for Gambit to remember and break hold, is for Rogue to use her powers again and siphon the energy So let's just reserve judgment for a storyline that's not even done yet than thinking it's going in this direction when it's not
incidentally this also happened in the comics.
Now it's worth it, you missing the post credits stinger at the end of last season that hinted at Apocalypse reviving Gambit
