I am so glad you made this video, Sarah! (...and not just because I'm ALWAYS glad when there's a Sarah Z video to watch.) I'd been noticing a LOT of anti-narcisism videos coming up in my YouTube recommendations--and I wondered what I'd done (or watched or ordered or said) to make that happened. (And the fact that I immediately thought I was to blame is ironic/fitting/fodder for my next therapy appointment.) Good to have such well-researched and well-presented explanations!

I had to do a presentation on Cluster B personality disorders a couple weeks ago and one thing I found out that surprised me is that NPD is not actually well studied, and the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria is actually pretty controversial because it puts too much emphasis on grandiosity, aggression, and exploitation of others, while underemphasizing fragile self-esteem, and feelings of inferiority or emptiness. Even psychiatrists don't know that much about this disorder, so it's hilarious that the pop psychology scene acts like they know Everything about those Spooky Scary Narcissists (/sarcastic). I'm glad you're covering this topic! I hate how narcissism has become so demonized and treated like Evil Person Disorder. It's frustrating to see how gleefully people label others as Irredeemably Evil But Make It Sciencey. It also, weirdly enough, feels like letting assholes off the hook because by armchair diagnosing them as a Narcissist, there's the implication that it's not actually their fault they're dicks.

Great video, describing it as a moral panic is such a good insight. Around ~42:00 you talk about how it can feel good after abuse to say "they were the one that was wrong." I totally agree and I actually feel like that was an important stage of my own healing from it, *however* I've observed sometimes people get stuck there. Like it's important to interrupt the thought patterns of thinking they were infallible, but I believe it's hard to move forward until you see them as another flawed person rather than an evil villain.
