Seeking your input for an upcoming video!
At long last we are making a video about the Sanctuary EP!
This release was a really special project in our artistic journey, and we know this EP remains a favourite for many of you. So we are looking for your input!
What would you like to know about the project?
Are there specific parts you'd like us to cover?
Which are your favourite moments and why?

This Time Around bass production is still among my favourite would be great to see that! Thanks guys.
HATS HATS HATS
Sanctuary EP remains one of my favorite albums of all time by any musical artist. The title track was my wife's procession song at our wedding ceremony. What I'd LOVE to learn more about: - The DRUMS! Specifically, MIDI arrangement, layering, and mixing across all tracks, from the foley-centric title track, to the detail and tastefulness of Starlite and This Time Around, to the heavier production on Fuego and Tetsuo's Redemption. - Arranging orchestral elements into each track, especially Sanctuary, Starlite, and This Time Around. Thank you SO much!
I concur with the other comments but I would be interested to see how your collab with Asa came together and how you collabed between your very technical sound engineering and his more acoustic sampling style. How did you guys meet and decide to do something legendary? And what did you learn from each other during this collab? Especially if those techniques actually came handy in and/or inspired later productions.
Sanctuary was such a gem and really holds a special place in my heart. Some stuff I'd like to hear about: - how many tracks were experimented with before finding the five that became the EP? - was it always an intention to make the EP get progressively more intense and if not how did you arrive at that cadence? - how involved (and to what degree) were you all with the Sanctuary music video?
I think the most interesting aspects for me would be the drum sound design in the title track or the chord sound in fuego that mimics the bass movement. So many good memories with this EP in particular!
The whole EP seemed extremely ambitious for its time and still sounds incredible today, were you both surprised with yourselves that you were able to pull it off so flawlessly, or did you kind of know going into it that you were going to be able to get it sounding the way it did. What are some of your proudest moments on the EP, sound design, drums, melodies/harmonies.
During the period of making that EP, what were some of your personal groundbreaking music production techniques that you discovered around that time, that you still continue to use today? Did that kind of music take a lot longer to make than it would now?
My favorite record that you two have done for sure. I'd be curious as to how you settled on the imagery (psychedelic, sacred geometry, third eye, etc.) which complements the sounds on the record so incredibly well. Absolutely massive piece, thank you so much. It occupies a meditative psychedelic electronic space that is entirely in its own category and near and dear to me.
Oh man I have a totally unreasonable number of things I'd love to learn - How to make soloed talking bass at 1:48 in Tetsuo's Redemption - Everything to do with arranging, mixing, processing etc Koo's voice - Those clean ringy chords at 0:31 in Fuego - Mixing strings - Breakdown of Starlite intro soundscape So excited for this one!! I have the vinyl and all 5 prints on my wall, one of them is still my FL Studio background, and my girlfriend and I view it as a metaphor for our love with the organic and electronic parts meeting and synthesizing into something greater <3<3<3 I would also recommend that you mention that old Mixmag influences mix for everyone to go listen to in case they don't know about it; it's fantastic!! Maybe even describe what you learned and implemented from the songs in it, if you like? You could even organize the video this way, matching influential songs to parts of Sanctuary https://m.soundcloud.com/mixmag-1/in-session-koan-sound-asa
very curious what you did with the vocals in This Time Around. That song saved my life in high school
The jump in production quality from releasing Akira/Endorphin through to the sanctuary EP is huge. What changed for you guys during that time?
The drums from Starlite 😍😍
Fuego was the one that I got completely hooked on and it’s still really cool. The rhythm and the call and response stuff always pops into my head, and the clap lowkey throws me off. Covering it and the thought process would be awesome - don’t tell me what the vocal chops are actually saying. I enjoy the mystery. I think at one point you guys were discussing the sims music and how it would be cool to borrow some ideas from it - I think around the Latin stuff but I honestly can’t remember… it was one of the earlier posts from like 2021 or maybe one of those discord hangout posts. I’ve lost where I’m going with this but I feel like Fuego kind of had that same vibe as far as the percs, rhythm, and feel. It was a super cool exploration away from the heavier or contemplative stuff. I’m holding out for an ep of just that. My offer doesn’t expire unless I do.
Can't wait to see this! I'd be interested to know what some of your inspirations were for this project as it's so unique.
I couldn't even begin to tell you how much these tracks have inspired me. I always love your guys uses of various real world instruments. You use a ton of strings in this EP. Were these played out by one of you? Or did you use samples and such from something like Komplete? Bless you guys for hearing us out. Cheers!
