WIP | Chapter Four
School has been so so much recently but I finally found some time to work on this illustration for Chapter Four! You'll notice Keia looks quite different here, and that's because this chapter takes place in a very different setting to anything that's been mentioned in the story so far.
I did some rearranging of my chapters a month or two ago after receiving some feedback that the story felt as though it was moving quite slowly at the start. That's been a big struggle with this first third of the book; I want to make sure I give enough context for the rest of the story, but I don't want it to feel like a bunch of exposition.
In my first draft of the book, I actually had written all of the scenes talking about Keia's background in past tense, but then after about ten chapters of this, I started to feel like it was becoming boring and repetitive. That's why Keia's POVs, no matter what time they're in, are now all in present tense. I want them to give us a slight sense of being off-balance in time; we aren't quite sure what is currently happening and what is them remembering, which, as you'll come to find out, ties in well with Keia as a character.
This next chapter is a little more fast-paced. I'm looking forward to sharing it! It's definitely one of my favourite chapters so far.
Now to finish the actual illustration...
