NPC Household Variety is Live
NPC Household Variety is out now on CurseForge!
If you've ever noticed that almost every background Sim in your world seems to live completely alone, this one's for you. The game has plenty of multi-Sim household templates, families, couples, roommate groups, it just barely uses them. This mod fixes that by injecting more templates into the NPC filter pool, weighting multi-Sim templates at 5x the probability of single-Sim ones, so your world actually fills out with families instead of an endless parade of solo NPC households. Additionally, the mod addresses a bug in the 2 parent, 2 child template that prevented it from being used properly by the game's spawn engine.
It respects world-specific household pools for Snowy Escape, Strangerville, and Cats & Dogs if you have those packs installed, and improves how the game reuses existing world Sims instead of constantly generating new ones.
This was definitely one of the more involved mods I've built, requiring more digging into the game's systems than anything else in my catalog so far. I'm planning a dev diary post soon going into the investigation and the backend work that went into getting this right, including some of the dead ends and red herrings I encountered along the way. If you're at all curious how this stuff works under the hood, keep an eye out for that one.
Special shoutout to prettyslowcooker for making the comment that inspired this mod!
