I just need yall to know, on another video about this there was a dude twenty comments deep on a thread defending JP's 'define belief' and refusal to answer a simple hypothetical, saying it was ad-hominem and a trap and extreme. The guy sounded sincere and like he was really struggling to accept that maybe JP was being dishonest, so I wrote a really long, really gentle breakdown of what JP was doing, why his 'define belief' thing was a deflection from a simple question about whether he believes in god or not, and that he doesn't answer the question because he seems to be an atheist who thinks religion is good, but only for stupid people, and that the reason this argument was so frustrating for him is because he was trying to defend someone being wilfully dishonest and flighty. And then the page refreshed and the entire thing disappeared. So that sucked. Anyway, great video large Joel. One of the best bits of commentary on this particular disaster.
OOF. I had a visceral reaction reading this. I've been there. it's why I'm constantly copying to clipboard when I'm writing (and certainly before hitting post on anything). I generally try to pick my battles but as soon as I'm in.. the prose is about to get purple and the paragraphs are going to be running
He is an awful debater, he is just using crappy jargon and doesn't listen.
I would love a part 2! I can't believe I just watched Jordan get asked "Do you believe in a tri-omni god" and accidentally answer by blaming the Jews for their circumstances in Nazi Germany.
I love Jordan Peterson’s debate tactic that the English language just doesn’t mean anything
joined the Patreon mostly for this video. I couldn’t watch the original without someone like Joel to mediate. Please make a part 2, it is tremendously satisfying to have u articulate the same confusion and disgust that I feel when watching Jordan Peterson talk. In his mind he’s literally an old pre-industrial war general fighting through the fog u see it with the “im not retreating YOURE RETREATING” and the “if you believe in something you LIVE and you DIE for it… don’t be so sure…” moments. He’s a pseudo intellectual and lowkey a bigot but he’s too cowardly to actually stand on any claims at all. It pains me that anyone anywhere takes him seriously. Especially because for a minute as a young teen I fell for his bullshit and it almost led me down the alt-right pipeline.
01:08:48 It's not gibberish, it's just the type of shit you say while tripping and think you just discovered some foundational truth of the universe and then the next morning you go "Well that was a little dumb"
I watched on nebula and joined the Patreon just to say PLEASE do a part 2. JP’s refusal to make a single coherent statement, his utterly meaning-destroying personal “definitions” of words, and periodic sudden outbursts of rage are breaking my brain and I need to feel like I’m not the only one witnessing this
Part 2!
Motherfucker; one hour of these goofs failing to nail him on his basic precepts and the you drop his fucked up definition of belief!? What is life!? What is existence!? Do words have meaning!? I hate this and I will be back for the next video.
"So how can you reject God, if you eat sandwiches and sandwiches are defined as God in my breakfast menu?"
Thank you for articulating so well why I've always hated watching debates.
I think you are very eloquent Joel; I live in permanent brain fog and I can't always organize my thoughts into concise wording so I enjoy living a bit vicariously through yours. Cheers to outliving this weenie of a man
My jaw hurts after watching this.
More pls
Part 2 please!
Make another one !
part 2 please!!!
Jordan Peterson is ready to die for his belief that he will not commit to anything with a yes or no answer ever, no matter how simple
As soon as I saw clips of this going around I knew you would have to do a video on it! Would love (but also hate haha) to see a part two if you can bear to do it!
When Peterson said, "If you believe something, you stake your life on it", I literally screamed lol where could that possibly have come from 😭😭 Great video btw ! would love part 2 :))
Peterson is so unnecessarily combative to the second guy who was cookin. It's just so hard to even engage with the points he's making with how unpleasant he is.
Woof, Jordan's 2nd claim is exactly as infuriating as you made it out to be. Also, not being familiar with Jubilee videos, what's with the dumb race-to-the-chair thing? What, only the fastest atheists get to talk to JP? lol. Please do a part 2, hating on this kind of stuff is like tooth-rotting candy I can't get enough of it.
Oh btw there's a weird cut at 54:31
Liked this a lot
Peterson acting like basically the most philosophy 101 Kant discussion prompt is a insult to his character and deeply insulting any heroic German who saved Jewish lives by lying was living in sin and committed heinous acts to get in that situation in the first place is chefs kiss pure gold
Holy shit this reads like Markov text
The term grifter gets thrown around a lot but I think nihilist is more apt. Peterson believes in nothing and his goal is to spend as much time as possible saying nothing. Obliterating the possibility of having an productive conversation is the goal. If you enjoyed doing this feel free to do a PT 2 but honestly, it's like a react video to watching a man publicly masturbate and opining on his stroke order.
The animal studies & evolved altruism guy didn’t make a good argument for “morality from science” (Peterson used “science” to refer to the human endeavor, but his interlocutor seemed to be using it to mean “the reality that science helps us understand”) but he did use the opportunity to communicate some ideas a JBP-curious viewer should hear. It really flies in the face of right-wing naturalism.
Part 2 please!
Part 2 please! This is feeding my inner atheist-tube goblin and he is sooo hungry 🧌 <---- (there he is)
Is Jordan Peterson not atheist anymore or he wants to be the only most special atheist guy in the world
He’s always been an atheist in denial. He refuses to accept the “atheist” label because his noncognitivism allows him to think of “God” as a vague abstraction instead of something real. It’s his strategy for reconciling his rationalist, modern aesthetic with his affinity for tradition & traditional hierarchy, which is often predicated on irrational or implausible ideas on its face.
I HATE this man so much. glad i wasn't in that jubilee room because I don't think I could be held accountable for my actions if he tried to pretend that he doesn't reject the polynesian thunder god just to try to make some inane point
please for the love of god (as defined by elijah) do a part 2
Waiter waiter! Part 2 please!
So if that is Peterson's definitition of "believe" (which he subtly asserts is a synonym for "think"), what is the point of having a debate in the first place? This was so stupid it blew my little mind. Peterson is saying that we would rather die! than change his beliefs? 🤯 Why even engage in conversation with anyone after they said something like that? Also, am I to understand that Peterson's definitition of "god" is just, "conscience"? And "religion" is "the belief that people are guided by conscience"? That is almost definitionally true. The only way that statement couldn't be true is if there was some kind of supernatural, ineffable, omnipotent entity that otherwise motivated the activities of humans... like, he has defined "god" and "religion" in such a way that to be an atheist one would therefore have to be a theist _by definition_. I know you basically already made this point but it was making me so crazy that I couldn't sit still, and none of these kids would call him out on it. It's all so utterly infuriatingly vacuous to pretend to be having a debate but instead just be hoodwinking a bunch of college kids by saying one thing and then gotcha!ing them by having an insane topsy turvy world definition for the words he's using; I do want a part 2 but for the same reason I'm sometimes compelled to prick my finger on a pointy cactus.
Two things: I generally can NOT STAND to watch Jubilee videos because I always just get pissed with both sides, one because they don't listen and one because they aren't focusing on the right arguments. Actually having someone else losing their minds reacting to this makes it tolerable to watch because it validates my feelings lol. So the second thing is a direct consequence of this: YEA I want part 2
imagine if jubilee videos had moderators
Part 2 please
yes part 2
I think when JP said that scientists believe that science is unified he specifically means that physicists believe that the Theory of Relativity and the Quantum Theory (which on their surface are very different) are part of a single unifying theory that we hope to discover one day. It's true that there's no epistemological basis for this belief but it's still different from religious dogma because we don't allow any other conjecture to base itself on it
Without even watching the first one I know I want to see the second one.
1:17:17 I like that! Unrelated to the debate that's a really well constructed explanation of why lying is morally right in that scenario which nicely answers the framing question about the value of truth
debates like this are so frustrating and insane to listen to. no one is establishing the terms of the debate, no one is agreeing upon definitions, no one is making sure a the central topic is actually being addressed, people are just making claims with nothing to support them, logical fallacies abound.... like this is obviously not an intellectual project just an entertainment one but the vibe for me is more like i want to blow my brains out. anyways love u big j
That's because of Jordan Peterson. I watched different people engage in such debates and they go much better. JP simply obfuscates and sabotages all attempts at normal communication.
JP absolutely pisses me off in this vid but I can't look away. Pt 2 pls
18:40 He was talking fast but I don't think he said he actually has a reductive view, he was saying that if he did the same thing as JP was doing for theism and defined one particular element of atheism, then they would both have reductive views
Yes, Part 2, please!
They asked if JP would lie to protect Jews hiding in his basement from Nazis and he said he wouldn’t be in that situation. So like. He would turn the Jews away?
He would have personally prevented the rise of Hitler, OBVIOUSLY! 🙄
The wildest pseudointellectualism moment was when he accused that guy of his definition being circular. Like. All definitions are circular. “To jump is to use your legs to make your body leave the ground” “that’s circular! Using your legs to make your body leave the ground is just what jumping is!” Like yeah. You are asking him to make A + B equal something other than B + A
It’s more projection on his part. He uses circular definitions to defend his notions of “God” and even moreso “religiosity” all the time.
Hey Big Joel, if you have any OBS questions, OBS upgrades and patches are part of my day job and I'd be happy to help you out
obsmvp
It's insane how many response videos I've watched about this Surrounded video, and yet I'm not tired of it at all
It’s a dazzling video lol
