Patreon Changes

Hey everyone! I wanted to give you all a heads up about some information Patreon sent to creators today. You should all be getting emails from Patreon about it tomorrow, but I wanted to make a preemptive post to elaborate a little more on it.

Starting this month, Patreon is looking to help creators receive more of their funds than they normally do. On average, a creator gets 80-88% of their pledges after fees. Patreon's goal is to make sure creators take about 95% of that instead. How are they going to compensate?

It seems their goal is to have a small fee of 2.9% + 0.35 cents added into pledges. Now, just to make sure everyone understands, this is how that breaks down.

How does this affect Patrons?

If you are currently pledging $3.00, this just means your pledge will be ~$3.44 now. ($3.00 + 2.9% (which is only 0.09) + 0.35).

If you are currently pledging $10.00, this means your pledge will be ~$10.64 now. ($10.00 + 2.9% (which is only 0.29) + 0.35).

Any other amounts will be easy to calculate. Take 2.9% of your pledge, add it into your pledge plus another 0.35 cents. So, Pledge + (Pledge x 0.029) + 0.35 = Total. Keep in mind, this is PER PLEDGE, so if you pledge to several creators, it's added to each pledge individually.

As you can see, there won't be a big change in the pledges moving forward. I can understand if this upsets anyone though, but this is 100% out of my control (I didn't know this was going to be a thing till today).

For anyone needing more information, Patreon has an FAQ about it here >> https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005631963 , and they should be emailing all Patrons tomorrow as well.

Thank you all for your support, and I totally understand if you need to withdraw your pledge. Thank you, regardless, for any and all support you have all shown me. I couldn't do this without you all!

~Dyne

I'm sorry to say, but if the changes go through, I will be cancelling all my pledges to creators at the end of the month. I only am able to support a few creators at low tiers, and the changes are going to be adding an extra 20% or so to my monthly charges which I can not sustain. I truly hope they don't go through with this as I would love to continue to support the people here.

WolfBite Interactive · December 11, 2017

Unfortunately, it's something that is already planned, so unless they cancel the idea from backlash, it'll be going into effect this month.

I'm keeping my pledge!

Thank you ;3\

Patreon handles new pledges and changes of pledges in an odd way during the earlier parts of the months and seems to make more recent posts inaccessible for a certain period of time (I think it's to prevent fraud). It's something I can't actually control, so give it a day or two and check again, or when I make my next update on the 16th, it should be good to go!

I'm sticking by my bigger pledges, including this one, for now. I know some creators are really anxious about lost pledges impacting their bottom lines, and maybe you are too; I hope that your patrons stay calm and things settle down for you all soon.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 8, 2017

Well, thank you~ I'm not as worried about it as some people, because it affects people that have a large number of $1 pledgers the most, I think. I've lost a handful of Patrons, unfortunately, but I'm not as concerned about my bottom line as I am about the satisfaction of my followers right now D8

Don't bother me none. You're stuck with me.

I don't suppose that's a bad thing~

This is fine by me and if it continues to ensure your stability and what not to be able to do what you love then its all great :D

Thanks so much :)

I'm totally okay with this :). Your work is amazing and you should be getting as much of the earnings from your hard work as possible. I'm just not sure how the new fees actually balance out for both the creators and the patrons.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 8, 2017

Thank you! We'll hopefully get a better idea of every soon (PAtreon is receiving a lot of backlash atm x3)

SilverS · December 7, 2017

Actually, after doing some research on my own, this turns out to be a horrible thing for patron and creators. Since we're having to pay more and you're actually receiving less of our money overall based on the total amount we are spending. See this reddit comment for details: https://www.reddit.com/r/patreon/comments/7i2kqd/patreon_will_start_charging_patrons_a_credit_card/dqvrb9d/

They make some pretty good points in the post, so we'll see what PAtreon does from here.

N
Nemakalia · December 7, 2017

Going to mention something that might not prove popular, but if there is concern for people who will find this difficult, why not reduce the cost of the pledge by the same equivalent as the rise in charge to each person? You would get the same amount as before, and users would remain happy at the reduced cost to avoid having to dump some patreons.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 8, 2017

This was my first thought, to compensate for it, but I'm going to play things by ear for now and see how it goes.

G
GrayMech · December 7, 2017

this is a great change! this means that you get more money to put towards the project and your personal health and well being, i didnt know that you only got 80-88% of the pledge and i'm happy that now you are getting the money you deserve since your work is just SO GOOD X3! here's hoping that the project continues to go smoothly and the extra money lets you implement all the extra little things and features you have wanted to!

C
Cuddlepaw MAL · December 7, 2017

wish more people saw it this way :3

N
Nickthulhu · December 7, 2017

Thanks for the heads up! I'll see how much of an increase this ends up being for all of the people I support.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

You're welcome! I hope it gives people a chance to plan accordingly.

F
Fuzen · December 7, 2017

Am i the only one not okay with this? If I give three dollars, I want to give three dollars and not more. Well, I keep my pledge here, but I'm canceling another project for that

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

I'm sure you're not the only one, but sadly, it's out of the creator's hands v__v And I appreciate you choosing to continue to support me as well!

L

No problem for me. Love your work and I'll keep supporting you

oh no. i cant handle paying 50 cents more per month. whatever are we to do.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

B
Brian Damiani · December 7, 2017

I am very much okay with this. It means that you get my money for EA and that's what I pledge for! So.... Insert Fry meme here.... SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! Hr hehe

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

Hahaha, well, thank you so much :)

B
BerraBear · December 7, 2017

Totally happy with that. More worried however about rumors that Patreon will cease allowing projects with explicit content. Have you heard anything about this, Dyne?

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

The recently updated how they handle NSFW content, but it was mostly aimed at certain groups of people doing webcam shows and porn, I do believe (like, actual porn). So, there should be no worries here! :)

A
Artem · December 7, 2017

Read it like "Patreon wants more money"...

E
Epsiloh · December 7, 2017

Cept patreon doesn't get a cent more since the service fee's came out of the creators pay package, Buisness wise you can see it as the creator is now charging you shipping to receive the product. Although if you wanna be outraged go right ahead I guess.

C
Cuddlepaw MAL · December 7, 2017

thank you so much for letting us know. I follow a ton on here and not one of them even mentions this lol.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

They might be too afraid that people will leave them, but I'd rather be upfront with you all and hear it from me first. (Also, some of the others might not understand how small of an increase it really is... x3)

J
Joshua Bushman · December 7, 2017

If paying a small processing fee means creators get to keep more of my actual pledge, then I'm totally okay with that. I'm not gonna be like those folks who used to call my call center job complaining about a $0.01 increase in their taxes. (I sincerely wish I were joking about that.)

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

I wish you were joking too, buuut, I know... X3 It's one of the reasons I wanted to get this post out there, so people woudln't be just... instantly surprised about it.

A
ArcTheWolf · December 7, 2017

Oh no, now I have to pay an additional 64 cents, the atrocity, I'm kidding, I wouldn't have started backing this project if I didn't support it through and through, a 64 cent increase is not a big deal.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

Thank you for viewing it as such :3

J
Jay Paul Mayer · December 7, 2017

Thanks for letting me know, so I can make the minor adjustment to my budget when figuring for the charge on the 1st. It's fair and i don't mind the change. It's just good to know ahead of time.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

You're welcome! I know, for some, they plan the exact amount, so the more notice I can give you all, the better!

W

HAha, I don't want anyone to be surprised though, so I wanted to make a post about it ASAP!

H
Hyao · December 7, 2017

Like you said... It's totally out of your control. I kinda admire it in you that you always explains everything, making people to understand what is going on with all those stuff. It's not such a big change, good that artists will gain more from the site. They are the ones that deserves the support after all. Good luck and take care!

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

I hope that it's easy to understand, that's one reason I wanted to get it out here before Patreon did, that way, I could explain it! Thank you :3

K

No worries here ^^

W

E
Enzo · December 7, 2017

I believe that's ok. It's best insured that creators get as much as they should for what they create. Everything has it's taxes. It's not too much.

W
WolfBite Interactive · December 7, 2017

It's not, but I wanted to let everyone know beforehand ;D
