Visual Novel Point of View
I asked about this on Discord, so I thought I'd ask here as well!
You might end up seeing a lot more polls from me in the future as I get ideas about what I want to do for my next project.
Do you have a preference in what kind of point of view your visual novels are told in?
ExcA, for example, is second person. "You saw Darius and grabbed his butt." as opposed to first person, "I saw Darius and grabbed his butt." or the third person "He saw Darius and grabbed the lion's butt."
Each brings its own merits to the story, but I'm curious to hear with PoV is your favorite!
Don't take these polls as defining definite results, as it's to gauge interest and see what folks have to say.

I enjoyed First or Second because I feel more involved in the story, compared to Third because then it's them in the story doing those actions.
I would say for me, it all depends on the kind of protagonist you have, and the story you're trying to tell. If your character is meant to be a vector for the player (I.e. Adastra, Extracurricular Activities) then second person would work best; as the narrative is focused on the player, and their story. As for narrative that's primarily character focused, and a driven (I.e. Remember the Flowers, Echo) I would say that I prefer first person, as it gives you the opportunity to really get into the character's headspace, and see through their perspective. As for third person, It definitely works in a traditional novel. But in the case of a visual novel it just feels a bit too detached from the characters. So as to put a greater focus on the greater narrative which is a bit less engaging as a player.
i think for a player-focused dating sim, second person is best. referring to the player as "you" helps make them feel included and more immersed in the romance. *I* want to be the one grabbing darius' butt, but if the prose says "I" or "He", it can feel more like an entity other than myself is doing the grabbing. "You" speaks directly to the player.
That's a good way to put it!
I said this in the server too, I think 2nd person is excellent for VN's when you have an 'insert' . 1st and 3rd Perspective work better for movies and stories as the viewer can't usually interact with the narrative!
Definitely depends. I think you've mentioned before that Eric is MEANT to be a stand in for the player (hence customization and some character choices) and for that, obviously 2nd person works great. In a different style VN (where the MC isn't meant to be the player) I think both 3rd and 1st work fine, personally
I like 1st or 3rd person, having the character narrate their own thoughts is immersion breaking.
I’m just weird for sure but I don’t like to feel personally involved in the story. I want to read about things happening to the characters, not to myself lol.
Haha, nothing wrong with that!
Oh, Okay, I choose the butt.
For me it definitely depends on the kind of story. I tend to like third person for stories that have a lot of moving parts, i.e. multiple *protagonists*. When there's a lot of moving parts, I find it can easily be kinda disorienting if the POV is too zoomed in, i.e. first or second person. Second person I really like for like general erotica. The challenge of second person is of course that it tends to be a lot of TELLING - but I don't necessarily mind it if the story is intended to be more of a sensory experience. First person then I would say I think works particularly well for horror and a particular kind of romance, where it's important that you experience what the main character is feeling/experiencing. It's hard for me if I don't particularly *like* the POV character, but man can a first person POV character I really like do some powerful things to the feels.
Hmm, all good points you bring up here!
I like being in the story, so I enjoy 1st person.
In general 2d, but in other vns or games that have a more medieval setting, 3d feels more right
I have a preference for second person. It gives me a sense of inclusion that I'm a part of the world without being directly myself, more of an attachment to the MC or other characters of the world than my real self.
I never thought about it like that, so that's good insight!
Most VN protagonists are not blank slate characters that are supposed to be the reader, so I'd say third person POV works best
First or second view is just fine for me X3 saddly cant vote for both
No offense for Dairus Butt but I rather grab Spencer butt instead I bet his butt feels better then Darius's. 😌
Depends on the scenario for sure. First and second are good if the player is intended to be a character in the game. Third feels better for a character that already has a set personality and such
