Check out the Yelp reviews for Farallones whale watching tours. They’re a real hoot.
I wonder if either of you have read or at least heard of Stan Goff’s “hideous dream” which is a travelogue/memoir about Stan’s experience of the 1994 invasion of Haiti as a special forces Sargent?
The first eleven minutes of this recording are an absolute joy to watch, poor Brendan pleading that you’re already streaming. Bless your hearts for dealing with tech garbage.
Finally picked up Erdogan pizza and Warnerd Iliad, Looking forward to both of them :)
Have you guys ever done anything on the Chaco war? Don’t think I’ve ever heard you mention it. Biggest war in 20th century americas in terms of casualties. Fought in one of the most inhospitable environments on earth, even for the hardy highlanders of Bolivia. Lots of conspiracy about it and led to the army taking control of Bolivia in the MNR revolution in 52’.
http://exiledonline.com/paraguay-a-brief-history-of-national-suicide/ yeah, Paraguay is one of the War Nerd's favorite topics and they did some early episodes on the War of the Triple Alliance. Paraguay's demographic collapse from war has come up recently as an off-hand comparison to Ukraine's prospects.
Now I've seen what you look like after listening to the podcast for years, it's all different
i love the technical difficulties! not being sarcastic it goes to the heart of whats so good about this show is that yall manage to make it endearing
I agree it's an essential part of the experience, also think the idea of more livestreams is a good one and keep them open to none Patreon people.
the crows “are screaming because they are screaming.”
John is the kind of person who would try to befriend crows only to find himself as a blood enemy of every crow, raven, magpie, etc. in Europe.
Why is it now only 2:45
it'll be restored shortly!
Great stream!
This rocked, classic RWN is talking both Naipaul and GI distress with equal insight and enthusiasm.
Had to jump early but would love a list of the travelogues mentioned! I wanted to ask John about Boswell/Johnson on the Hebrides, of which I was reminded when he mentioned Johnson’s “scratching his weird face” the other day. Hilarious.
That was great!!
Loving the livestream!
Question: Since you usually end on dreadful notes - are there positive things that are relatively new that have a positive note (books, music, etc)
I'm out and can't listen. Can you comment on how much involvement Egypt has with Hamas?
Seems like Qatar is running things in Egypt, so probably quite a lot.
Reading Erdogan Pizza is a trip for me: I read most of these columns when they came out as I was listening to Radio War Nerd. I see the world very differently thanks to both of your efforts. Not always pleasant, but always rewarding! Thank you for this. (btw, the book before that was Vincent Bevins "As we burn" - also memory heavy since you went deep into a lot of those stories.)
Any thoughts on the end of the era of Victoria Neuland??
Blue Jean baby…. LA Lady…..
