Thanks again for a another very informative episode. I knew absolutely nothing about Gambia. Here's a small suggestion that would greatly benefit newer subscribers: Please mark the time where the subject matter begins and where the current events updates ends. If the current events section is no longer current, one might want to skip that bit. I normally enjoy it but it would be nice to have an option. Thanks again.
What was the song at the end of this episode?
Fascinating episode. Please do two Africa stories: 1). Kenya. 2). King Leopold in the Congo. Thank you so much for all your work.
Thanks. Those are good ideas.
Hey, Dr. Dolan...I noticed you said you'd never seen Casablanca, but you did mention in a prior episode watching it with your brother and questioning why it's a classic. :D
I saw a clip of the famous piano scene and just felt embarrassed at how bad it was. I'm not saying I was right. It was that feeling Beavis and Butthead have watching an old driver's ed movie: "This movie is back from when people were stupid." I believe the Germans call this Urdummheit.
Could I get the names of the two books mentioned?
You guys should really have Jordan B Peterson on. He's captivating as shit when he talks about how monstrous humans can be and how you need to be capable of being a monster to defend yourself in the world. He's also an expert on the Evils of totalitarian states, all of them. He's mostly known for his strong stance on Free Speech in (the Soviet Socialist Republic of) Canada but, he's absolutely amazing and he makes a strong case that free speech is the basis of a civilized society. I think having him on would bring out a great perspective on war that we don't often see, mostly we've seen it in the Books on Killing and On Combat !
Thanks for the suggestion!
I was raised by my father, who ran the money-losing "Dolan School of Memory and Rapid Reading." I kept the grudge and the technique.
Is there any chance you would divulge that technique for us, the slow-reading masses?
Yeah, Wallace railed against the "pointy headed intellectuals".
Since you mentioned it in the show, can you suggest some Russian writers . When is your translation ready, and why does Pleasant Hell cost so much?
Well, in reverse order...Pleasant Hell: because I'm too feckless to get it republished. The Iliad is scheduled for Autumn 2017. And my favorites are Bulgakov, Limonov, Gogol and Tsvetayeva.
can anyone recommend some good books written in west african english?
Have you read Tutuola's Palm Wine Drunkard and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts?
Quick note to trolls—fuck off back to your twitter playground, you will be deleted and blocked here.
Will we ever get an episode on the wars of the Indian subcontinent between India & Pakistan. Perhaps the only place where a large conventional war can actually take place.
Yes, we should do this.
The CIA is trying to frame it as "their commitment to transparency," but the CREST release was actually the result of a FOIA lawsuit by my organization, MuckRock. The whole story behind the suit - and the CIA's creepy/dumb arguments for why they couldn't put the docs online - is pretty good reading: https://www.muckrock.com/news/archives/2017/jan/19/three-year-saga-behind-CIA-release/
Great episode, looking forward to reading the book recommendations! The website those Biafran secessionists run is also pretty interesting (thebiafratelegraph.com). I don't think I have a clear grip on how much their movement actually resonates with most people in Igboland and the Niger Delta though.
No, I don't either. We need to get somebody from there on the show. If anybody knows a likely candidate, send me a message.
Haven't listened to this episode yet (will tonight)... just wondering if Mark Ames and Abby Martin had their interview? Anyone know?
Yup. Here it is https://mobile.twitter.com/MarkAmesExiled/status/824294016145653764
Haha, this episode is so good I have to go back and unlike some of the old ones.
