Eritrea is hated by the west because it rejected the whole neo-colonial scam of accepting huge "loans" for develeopment or allowing UN agencies in to run country. Instead it decided to use it's human resources to develope through hard work. As a Result Eritrea was the only African to actually meet the UN develepoment goals providing health care, cutting down on poverty and illiteracy reducing disease etc. In other words Eritrea is hated for the same reason as Nicaragua or Cuba were for trying to improve the lives of their people rather then enrich corporations. See This great speech on topic http://stopimperialism.org/eritrea-the-danger-of-a-good-example-in-africa/
Could you possibly post the music credits? These are some bangers, especially the 48:00 tune.
Great episode - thanks!
No I think he meant the French army of 1916 was never going to be confident and effective, not that the French as a whole forever would lose their will. It was my understanding that the Verdun/Somme battles led to immediate mutinies among the rank and file that almost collapsed the entire Army (risking survival of the French state, let alone ability to attack Germany) and even French political leaders at the time stated that they would not be able to use their army offensively to British political leaders at the time. But I agree with your last point, that's basically the truth. Just don't underrate morale as a factor, the Somme really did sap enthusiasm for the war among the Allies.
It wasn't Verdun that led to the mutinies in the French Army, but the Nivelle Offensive of 1917 in the Aisne that were followed by mutinies. The French lost heavily at Verdun, but it wasn't a total shit show for them. The logistical organization that Petain's staff put together was rather amazing, so the French were always fed and armed. The French Army was also rested, as a huge percentage of the French Army was rotated in and out of Verdun. This meant that every unit involved got some leave and time to rest. The Germans through the same troops at the salient for a year, whittling down their units to nubs. Regarding French morale, Verdun was not a blow, as German offensives actually raised morale throughout the war, as French soldiers did feel motivated to defend their country. Although WWI really should be seen as a pyrrhic victory for France, Verdun did not destroy the French Army and its capacity to make war. The French emerged from Verdun with better tactics and a better organizational system. They would use them at the second Battle of the Marne in 1918, a huge and decisive battle English historians never seen to mention.
With all due respect: The armies that won the 2nd Battle of the Marne were about 3/4 French - good book on the subject: https://books.google.at/books?id=2yYFn-SzIyQC - so it's wrong to say the French "weren't going to fight again" after Verdun. That idea is a result of reading history backwards (knowing that France lost in 1940) and of the correct explanation being simply depressing (and boringly simple): Britain and France were weaker than Germany, survived 1914-17 because they were fighting with Russia and Italy, won in 1918 because America joined, and lost in 1940 because they fought alone.
This is absolutely correct. Despite their losses, Verdun was never the fiasco for the French that people make it out to be.
