The Mamelukes were Circassian Turks (blond & blue eyed according to John Glubb's (Glubb Pasha) book on them). He states that the Mongols had left a reduced garrison of 10000 men due to internal Mongol politics; hence the loss.

Oddly enough, I've been rowing the "Mike Bhatia" at my local boat club for years, named after one of the academics killed in the HT program.
Really well presented. I appreciate you highlghting the difference between America's stated (fuzzy at best)goals and its actions. I'm really hoping something can be done about the audio quality, at last. Mark's room is pretty echo-filled, not a huge problem, but the typing and paper shuffling are as loud as anything in the show, and they are PAINFUL. I'm sure there's a youtube video on setting up mics, you gotta do something different. Still loving the razor-sharp analysis. Inflict and endure, just not on our eardrums please.
