Radio War Nerd EP #192 — Simón Bolívar & Nadia Savchenko

Recorded: July 30, 2019

The War Nerd tells the incredible epic & tragic story of The Liberator of South America, Simón Bolívar. . .

At 1:52:00 — Ames tells the anti-epic, anti-tragic story of Ukrainian neofascist loonball Nadia Savchenko, hero of liberal western hacks — to illustrate how the election victory of Jewish comedian Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine represents a complete repudiation of the western-backed Maidan revolution.

Found some pics of Nadiya on the internet. This b**** has “Nazi” written all over her. She even looks like a skinhead without shaving her head.

RSS feed should be working since yesterday afternoon. Apologies to everyone for the glitches. The Google oligarchs keep stealing the url, their aggression must not stand, man.

V. interesting episode. Does anyone have an opinion on the Arana biography - is it worth reading, or is there a better one out there (in English or Spanish)?

Thanks for another outstanding show. I learned much I did not know about Bolivar and South America as well. Moreover, I have had no trouble downloading this show. I tried the link provided and got a page full of text that i do not know what to do with. Any thoughts on that?

That text bug still showing up? You're able to download?

"Alive" discussion reminded me of this classic Simpsons bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flmodRnJbDo

They have it all covered. One of these days I'll recount my 6th grade book report on Alive, complete with photos.

Like Mark said, there's little journalistic questioning of Savchenko now. I only found two articles explicitly discussing her anti Semitic remarks, one being a NYT opinion piece that mentioned her in one sentence. The other was from tabletmag, where Vladislav Davidzon wrote an article specifically about her. To his credit, he actually focused on her, both as military leader, a Russian prisoner, and her remarks after parliament regarding Jews in Ukraine. However, even after discussing her remakes (about how Jews are "2 percent of the population yet hold 80% of the power" which is basically indistinguishable from any alt-right talking point) he ends the article by saying "It is, of course, always an extraordinarily disappointing to see a national heroine succumb to the toxin of racism and anti-Semitism." Again, it's good that Davidzon even wrote about her, as basically no one else has in the mainstream media, but it seems clear that Savchenko didn't not simply become anti Semitic overnight. If possible perhaps you can have a writer from defending history to talk more about the topic. https://t.co/brXOKIvTm5

Davidzon is awful. His one job has been PR crisis management for Ukraine's ultranationalists/neofascists/Nazis. It's a long and ugly story for another time. But the fact that he did almost the only semi-mainstream article focusing on Savchenko after she came out of the Nazi closet is actually more disturbing than anything. It's like they gave that job to the one guy who's practiced in running cover for neofascists.

To hate your fellow citizens so much that you don't want them to have health isn't pulling the trigger, but... Along with the murder and suicide rates--especially among children--I don't see how the US isn't in a civil war.

Good point. From that perspective it's almost impossible to see it otherwise. Makes me so angry.

The Extra History podcast have quite a good series on Bolivar. I was told that when San Martin and Bolivar parted, San Martin is rumored to have said that the continent was not big enough for the both of them and so went into exile.

Just wrapped up the Revolutions podcast chapter on Bolivar, serendipitous timing. Once John talked about how sick the Liberator was before he passed I knew he’d need to do an episode covering a kindred, frequently ill soul.

Mike Duncan does a great job generally, and the Bolvarian series is excellent.

As far as pregnancy and healthcare in America - something to look out for, is that the care for the mother drops off almost completely immediately after birth, despite a lot of serious complications happening after the child is born. This happened with my wife and our first child - she developed life-threatening postpartum pre-eclampsia and the doctors missed obvious signs, until it was almost too late.

M
Mark Ames · August 1, 2019

Sorry to hear about that -- frightening, tbh. We had some complications with the first birth, but it wasn't for the usual reasons of someone not paying attention or rushing us through, in hindsight it was more because of the very nebulous nature of the whole process, which doesn't seem to be a priority of advanced medicine.

The time of Bolivar's revolution was fascinating, and once again, Napoleon's ghost lingers over world events. Great episode.

the American birthrate thing is the core of White Genocide, one of the hundred emergent neofascist movements, which makes the (idiotic) argument that falling white birthrates + a left-wing immigration policy constitute an attempt to commit genocide against white people – its advocates are almost certainly too stupid to know, but of course they're echoing Mussolini's weird obsession with birthrates and demographics
