You say Iran's not Venezuela, but I remember when you were saying Venezuela was a fearsome opponent.

Same with Hezbollah, the Syrian Kurds, even Hamas. All of them were paper tigers.

It’s amazing that we’re witnessing the results of an earlier regime change effort in Syria with the darlings of the pro-regime change “left” in the west (the type who would hurl Assadist as an insult), the YPG and Kurd civilians, now being forcibly pressed into the Sunni Islamist state or ethnically cleansed at the same time they cheerlead for what could only produce a similar result in Iran. Highlighting they’ve learned nothing and that they’ll continue being useful idiots on the side of western imperialism.

I don’t think talking about the 1979 Iranian hostage rescue debacle is relevant. I wish the hosts were a bit more humbled given the recent string of US/Israeli victories exposing their opponents as bumbling losers. I can’t believe John would say something like “Iran is no Venezuela” at this late date. The last couple of years have shown all these countries are paper tigers.

America has spent a lot of assets these last ten years and so I think it's getting easier to scare trump with the specter of burning aircraft carriers sinking into the sea with all the blame on him Maybe

Im not a alarmist but im quite confident a micro civil war is going to emerge in usa in next 2 years. I have been following this forever and the signs are all pointing in that direction. Id love an episode going over potential scenarios. Im sure you two are thinking about them.

Unless you mean continued episodes of random, stochastic violence like mass shootings or assassinations, not a chance.

Is Patreon giving you all the business about the number of paying patrons vs. number of listeners, too?

Ahh. Mark’s only complaint is wintry conditions. John’s only ailment is a fucked up tooth. Nature is healing

Just thinking about Greenland. Why is NATO so mad? Last time I checked, Turkey still occupied Cyprus. And I’m sure that caused a far larger loss of life than a military takeover of Greenland will.

J
JoR · January 18, 2026

I feel like it’s pretty simple. No one in NATO owned Cyprus. Someone in NATO owns Greenland. If little ole Denmark gets its land taken, what’s gonna stop the USA from taking whatever valuable lands or assets UK/France has oversees? NATO is basically a mafia in a lotta way, it’s bad for business for the boss to steal from the capos so brazenly

Any good sources for updates/summary of the Al-Nusra regime offensive against the SDF happening right now? It sounds like the Kurds are melting away but these mostly seem to have been Sunni-dominated areas that they took from ISIS and never had a chance of keeping once Sunni Hitler started to push.

S
StingrayMD · January 18, 2026

The US pretty much told the SDF to withdraw from West of the Euphrates and the SAA just kinda walked in

The fact that that carved up map has "Arabistan" as two noncontiguous territories that would just so happen to inherit a big petrochemical plant (western blob) and Iran's shipyards in and around Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz (eastern blob) is one of the most telling bits on that map.

T
Tristan · January 19, 2026

They gotta hand that map back in, you cannot go around naming a place Arabistan! Call it Elam or something if you wanna be crazy, but Arabistan?? Cmon man

C
Cathode Ray Dude · January 17, 2026

Hope the people succeed regardless of foreign interference. Fuck theocracies.

.
. · January 17, 2026

Western capital interference has never, ever worked out in regular people’s favor. Not calling you out specifically but I don’t know how many times this same playbook has been used and it has caused absolute fucking misery and genocidal levels of death and pain for people to condemn the interference first and foremost before anything else.

C
Christopher Small · January 17, 2026

Regarding the Iranian state’s willingness to show the dead on television: i think they just figured the framing had changed. The efforts to co-opt the protests were so overt this time around that at some point a row of dead protesters stopped being “victims of a brutal state crackdown” and started being “collateral damage of an attack on the country.” And if that was the case, broadcasting the chaos and death was a win-win for convincing the Iranian mainstream that maybe this wasn’t their cause, and wasn’t worth the risk
