Regarding Bill Maher, I think he’s a good insight into the “over 50 liberal but pro Israel” crowd that you both reference often. It’s (unfortunately) an important demographic overall. This is mostly anecdotal from my own life but I think it captures a trend. Maher, as insufferable as he is, has a decent cultural impact. For boomers and gen x’ers, he’s almost like a horrible, yet influential, knockoff of George Carlin. His religion movie is a godsend (lol) for people who identify as atheists, or at least people who like to mock religious people. As a kid it was funny and maybe even “informative” but now it’s just annoying , even as someone non religious. But for those who grew up on more religious circumstances, it hits home and really made Maher a significant cultural figure. Again, I feel this is a good chunk of people (men) in these generations, especially those liberal/center. 50+, generally liberal, but probably only to piss off their more conservative parents haha. This is a tangent but Maher is also their way of “being liberal and NOT PC!!”. Most of Maher’s shtick is “dems lose only because of PC politics”. so, people who watch his monologues resonate with this. It becomes natural for them to equate Palestine with “woke politics that let trump won”. As you both rightly point out, those generations have decades of anti Arab propaganda sewn into them. TLDR multiple members of my family in this age group have identified as liberals all their lives. Reagan was the devil, bush was a dummy, trump is crazy. Socially they grew up in the 60-70s. But Israel is THE blind spot, and Maher is the epitome of the “PEP” phenomenon. Kind of an “all over the place” rant but Maher is the perfect way to get a pulse on this demographic

Weiss has the same appeal to elderly Americans as mayor Pete. They’re both what they wish their kids were. They just appeal to slightly different boomers. Neither appeals to anyone under 50.
